Garage insurance for motorhome businesses

Motorhome businesses work with high-value vehicles that often stand idle for months. Storage, installation work and gas systems call for different arrangements from those of an ordinary garage.

In brief

Motor trade insurance (garageverzekering) for a motorhome business arranges two things at once: your business's liability for injury and damage to other people's property, and the motor vehicle cover for motorhomes you move or drive in the course of your business. That second cover is needed because every motor vehicle is subject to the compulsory insurance requirement of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), even for a short move to the wash bay or a test drive with a customer.

With motorhomes, three risks of their own are added. First, the value per vehicle: a single motorhome often represents the value of several cars, which sets the limits for the vehicle cover. Second, storage: winter storage means you have customers' property in your care for months on end, with requirements on the site, fire compartmentation, batteries and supervision. Third, work on activities gas systems, electrics and fitted equipment, where the fire risk and the liability are greatest.

It is important that the business activity on the policy matches what you actually do. Trading, servicing, fitting, hire and storage are each a different risk. See also the commercial motor trade insurance for the body, per component.

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Business activity: trading, fitting, servicing or storage
  • Turnover and payroll: the usual bases for calculation
  • Value and number of vehicles: motorhomes weigh heavily per unit
  • Storage capacity: indoors, outdoors and fire separation
  • Security and supervision: fencing, cameras, key management
  • Claims history: previous fire and theft claims

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Four points for motorhome businesses

With motorhomes these four subjects determine whether the policy actually pays.

Storage is a risk in its own right, not a side issue

Anyone offering winter storage has high-value vehicles in their care for months. Insurers impose requirements: a secured site or building, fire separation, supervision, a maximum number of vehicles per compartment and rules on charging and storing batteries. Whether gas bottles may be left in place is often regulated as well. Set out in your storage agreement what the customer must remove and whether they keep their own motorhome insurance in force; double cover does not mean a double payment.

Gas, electrics and fitted equipment are the heaviest liability exposures

Work on a gas system, on lithium batteries, on an inverter or on solar panels carries a real fire and injury risk. Insurers require the work to be carried out to the applicable standards by demonstrably competent staff, and require you to check installations afterwards and record that check. Hot work such as welding and grinding call for precautions agreed in advance. If they are missing, a declined claim is a real prospect. Keep job sheets, inspection reports and evidence of the materials used.

Driving licence, dimensions and the class of drivers

Motorhomes above 3,500 kg maximum permitted mass require a category C1licence. If an employee drives without the correct entitlement, cover lapses. On top of that, height and manoeuvring damage is a classic: a roof vent or awning against a workshop door. Record who may move motorhomes and under what instructions. Report it too if you start hiring vehicles out on a regular basis: hire is a different use and does not fall under a policy based on trading and servicing.

What falls outside the cover

Excluded are, among others: the customer's personal belongings left in the motorhome, damage from soil contamination, for which separate environmental damage insurance is needed, and the cost of redoingyour own defective work. Also outside the policy: driving without a valid licence or under the influence, taking part in competitions, and damage from wear, damp or deferred maintenance to the bodywork. Fines are not insurable and intent or wilful recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Are customers' motorhomes insured while in storage?

Only if you have taken out vehicle or storage cover for them. The liability cover pays only where you are liable, for example where you have demonstrably fallen short. Fire or theft without fault on your part does not come under it. Agree with customers whether they keep their own motorhome insurance in force and record that in the storage agreement.

What if a customer's belongings disappear from the motorhome?

Personal belongings left in the motorhome are usually outside the cover. Include a term in your storage conditions that valuables must be removed and that you do not store contents. Record what is present when you take the vehicle in and have the customer sign for it. That prevents disputes later.

May my mechanic drive a motorhome of more than 3,500 kg?

Only with a category C1 licence. If someone drives without the required entitlement, that is an exclusion on virtually every motor policy and the loss stays with you. Record for each employee which categories they may drive, check validity periodically and restrict the moving of heavy motorhomes to those employees.

Does anything change if I start hiring motorhomes out?

Yes. Hire is a different described activity from trading or servicing, with its own risk profile and its own conditions on drivers, deposits and use abroad. Report it before you start. If you hire out without notifying the insurer, that engages the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and the payment can be reduced or refused under Article 7:930 DCC.

Do I need other cover besides motor trade insurance?

Usually yes. Think of business contents and goods insurance for tools, lifts and parts, buildings or tenant's improvements cover for the premises, business interruption insurance for a shutdown after a fire, and environmental damage insurance for soil contamination. Those risks do not fall under motor trade insurance and are regularly overlooked in motorhome businesses.
