In brief

In law, a light quadricycle (brommobiel) is a moped on four wheels with a yellow registration plate and a top speed of 45 km/h. Third-party liability insurance is compulsory as soon as the registration is in your name. You drive it on an AM driving licence or on a category B licence, from the age of sixteen.

Value over time. Depreciation is flat. With damage to the drivetrain the total loss point soon comes into view.

Security and repair. Vandalism and glass damage occur more often than theft. Plastic panels keep repair costs down, but delivery times can run on.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your moped insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price: the main basis for calculation
  • Year of manufacture and trim level: petrol or electric
  • Age of the driver: the most important factor for young riders
  • Postcode area
  • Storage and security
  • Cover and excess chosen

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Value over time on a Microcar

Depreciation is flat. With damage to the drivetrain the total loss point soon comes into view.

No helmet requirement, but seat belts and child seats

There is no helmet requirement for a light quadricycle (brommobiel) — unlike a low-powered moped, for which one has applied since 1 January 2023. What does apply is the seat belt requirement and the rules for children. A child under 1.35 metres belongs in a suitable child seat. This is taken into account in the event of injury, including under the cover for accidents to occupants.

Scooters and low-powered mopeds

Report modifications; never tune for extra speed

Vandalism and glass damage occur more often than theft. A tuned light quadricycle is no longer what the policy describes. After an accident the insurer may refuse the payout and recover the other party's third-party liability claim from you.

Repairs and parts

Plastic panels keep repair costs down, but delivery times can run on.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Which driving licence do I need?

An AM licence or a category B licence, from the age of sixteen. In law a light quadricycle is a four-wheeled moped with a yellow registration plate and a top speed of 45 km/h.

Is a helmet compulsory?

No. The helmet requirement that has applied to low-powered mopeds since 2023 does not apply to light quadricycles. The seat belt requirement and the child seat rules do apply.

What should I watch out for with this make?

Depreciation is flat. With damage to the drivetrain the total loss point soon comes into view.

What if I have it tuned for extra speed?

The vehicle then differs from what is stated on the policy. The insurer can refuse the payout and recover from you the amount it pays to the other party.

What does the insurer require against theft?

Vandalism and glass damage occur more often than theft.

Do I build up no-claims years?

With most insurers yes, and they can often be transferred later to a car. Ask about it, because not every company records them.
