In brief

The own-damage cover on a motorhome is about the vehicle and the fixed fittings. Everything you bring along and take out again falls outside it. Sports and hobby equipment therefore belongs under separate contents or camping equipment cover, or under the baggage cover of a travel insurance policy. Both have their own sum insured, their own excess and almost always a maximum per item that is lower than people expect.

The sticking point is value. Two e-bikes, a set of kite equipment or a complete set of golf clubs easily exceed the usual limit for loose items. If that amount is set too low, there is underinsurance and the insurer pays proportionately less. So draw up a list with purchase values and keep receipts and photographs. Without proof of value and ownership, a claim often founders at the first question.

There are also requirements about how you behave. Theft from the motorhome is usually only paid where there are traces of forced entry; items taken from an unlocked motorhome or from under the awning are at your own expense. For bicycles on the rack, almost every policy requires an an approved lock attaching them to the rack. Valuable equipment left unattended for long periods is usually excluded.

Where does your equipment fall?

Three routes for insuring hobby and sports equipment, each with its own limits.

With the motorhome

Contents cover

Loose items in the motorhome under a sum insured of their own alongside the own-damage cover.

  • Camping equipment and household goods
  • Theft only with signs of forced entry
  • Maximum per item
  • Excess per event
When travelling

Travel baggage cover

Sports and hobby items you take with you while travelling, including outside the motorhome.

  • Cover on the campsite too
  • Sub-limit for sports equipment
  • Often market value after a few years
  • A report to the local police required
Valuable

Separate item cover

A separate policy or item-by-item declaration for equipment above the ordinary limit.

  • E-bikes and specialist bicycles
  • Diving, kite and winter sports equipment
  • Valued on the purchase invoice
  • Security requirements per item

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong with sports equipment

Four points that determine whether your equipment is actually paid for.

The limit per item is decisive

Alongside the total sum insured, policies apply a maximum per item and sometimes a separate sub-limit for sports equipment and electronics. An e-bike or a complete diving set quickly exceeds it. Add up the value of your equipment and compare it with both limits. If your equipment is above them, declare the items separately or take out separate cover; otherwise the insurer pays up to the limit and nothing above it.

Bicycles and racks have requirements of their own

Bicycles on the back of the motorhome are a favourite target. Almost every policy requires them to be secured to the rack with an an approved lock and often sets a maximum per bicycle. Stricter requirements apply to e-bikes, or the cover is excluded altogether. Take the battery inside, note frame and chip numbers and keep the invoices. Without a frame number and proof of purchase, a theft claim is impossible to support.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: theft without signs of forced entry, so also from an open motorhome or from under the awning; damage during the sport itself, such as a broken ski or a surfboard damaged in the water; wear and tear, scratches and normal use; equipment you hire out or use commercially without declaring it; and items left unattended. Intent and recklessness are also excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Keep proof of ownership and value

When a loss occurs you must show that you owned the items and what they were worth. Keep purchase invoices digitally, photograph your equipment and note serial numbers. In the event of theft abroad, report it to the local police on the spot: without a police report, most insurers refuse the claim. Report the loss as soon as reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires, and do not throw damaged items away before the loss adjuster has seen them.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Total value of the equipment: determines the sum insured
  • Number and type of valuable items: e-bikes weigh heavily
  • Limit per item chosen: a higher limit means a higher premium
  • Security and how items are stored: locks and storing items inside
  • Territory and length of trip: outside Europe costs more
  • Excess per event: a higher excess lowers the premium

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do my bicycles fall under the motorhome insurance?

Not under the vehicle's own-damage cover. Bicycles belong under the contents or baggage cover, often with a maximum per bicycle and a requirement that they are attached to the rack with an approved lock. E-bikes are regularly named separately or excluded because their value is high. Ask in advance which limit applies and declare expensive bicycles separately.

What is a sub-limit per item?

It is the highest amount the insurer pays for a single item, regardless of the total sum insured. If your equipment costs more than that sub-limit, the difference is at your own expense. If you want to avoid that, declare the item separately with the purchase invoice, so that it falls under a higher or individually agreed limit.

Is damage during the sport itself covered?

Usually not. A ski that breaks while skiing, a surfboard damaged in the surf or a bicycle that falls during a ride counts as damage from normal use. There is cover for theft, fire and damage from an external peril such as an impact or a storm. Read the description of insured events carefully.

Do I have to report a theft abroad to the police?

Yes. Almost every policy requires a report from the local police, made at the place and on the day of the theft. Do not wait until you are home, because a report made in the Netherlands afterwards is rarely accepted. Ask for a copy or a reference number and photograph the signs of forced entry on the motorhome.

Does travel insurance with baggage cover help?

Often it does, because it covers baggage outside the motorhome as well, for example on the campsite or in a mountain hut. Note that the sub-limit for sports equipment there is usually lower than the total baggage cover and that after a few years settlement is at market value. For expensive equipment, separate item cover remains the surest route.
