In brief

Changes to health insurance come from two sources. The content of the basic package, the compulsory excess and the way the healthcare allowance works are set nationally and are the same at every insurer. The premium, the type of policy, the contracted healthcare providers and the supplementary packages are set by your own insurer .

On this page we deliberately do not quote specific amounts or changes to the package. Those change each year, and an out-of-date figure on a website is worse than no figure. Below you can see where to find the current position and which documents govern.

Finass Verzekert holds an AFM licence for non-life insurance. Health insurance falls under a different licence category; we do not advise on it and do not act as an intermediary for it. For liability, home, motor, income and sickness absence cover you can come to us.

How to check it yourself

Four steps that give you certainty about what is changing for you.

Distinguish national changes from those made by your insurer

What is in the basic package , how high the compulsory excess is and how the healthcare allowance works are determined nationally through the Zorgverzekeringswet (the Dutch Health Insurance Act) and the regulations based on it. Your insurer can change nothing about that. The premium, the type of policy, the contracted providers and the supplementary packages it does set itself. If you know which type a change is, you also know where to look.

Read the letter about changes and the schedule of reimbursements

Your insurer sends an overview of the changes each year. That letter states the main points; the details are in the policy conditions and the schedule of reimbursements. Look out for changed maximum reimbursements in the supplementary cover, new personal contributions and changed conditions for referrals or authorisation. If it changes the conditions to your disadvantage, an opportunity to cancel arises.

Check the healthcare contracts of your own practitioner

Health insurers conclude contracts with hospitals, clinics and therapists each year. With an benefits-in-kind policy they pay for care from contracted providers; with others you usually receive only part of the bill. This list is often only finalised late in the year and is sometimes still adjusted in January. Look up your own practitioner in the insurer's provider search tool before you choose.

Do not rely on news reports or comparison sites alone

News reports summarise and comparison sites calculate with assumptions. Both are useful for orientation, but neither is your contract. What you actually get reimbursed is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurance card (verzekeringskaart), the standardised overview of the main points. If a report differs from your own documents, your documents govern.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Basic package — set nationally, the same everywhere
  • Compulsory excess — set by law each year
  • Type of policy — benefits in kind, reimbursement or a combination
  • Contracted care — contracts run per calendar year
  • Additional packages — maximum reimbursements change
  • Acceptance for supplementary cover — no obligation to accept

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice.

How it works

  1. You read the letter about changesYour insurer sends an overview of what is changing each year.
  2. You check the official sourceFor the basic package the national regulations apply, not your insurer.
  3. You check the healthcare contractsIs your own practitioner still in the insurer's provider search tool?
  4. We look at the restLiability, home, traffic, income and legal expenses.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Why does this page not quote specific amounts?

Because premiums, the compulsory excess and the content of the basic package are set each year and an out-of-date figure on a website leads to poor decisions. We also do not act as an intermediary for health insurance. We would rather point you to the sources that are current: your policy conditions, your insurance card (verzekeringskaart) and the official information about the basic package.

Where do I find what is in the basic package?

The basic package is set nationally under the Health Insurance Act. The central government and the National Health Care Institute publish what is in it each year and what is changing. Your insurer may not add anything to it or take anything out of it; it only determines the premium, the type of policy and which healthcare providers it contracts.

May I cancel if my conditions change?

If your insurer changes the conditions or the premium mid-term to your disadvantage, an opportunity to cancel arises. Changes taking effect on 1 January coincide with the ordinary switching period: you cancel with effect from the end of the calendar year and then choose a new insurer. Always check the time limit in your insurer's letter.

Can Finass Verzekert compare my health policy?

No. Our AFM licence covers general insurance; health insurance falls under a different licence category. We do not compare, advise on or act as an intermediary for it. For liability, home, contents, motor and legal expenses cover and their business equivalents we do compare the offers of several insurers.

Do you need advice on your non-life insurance?

Call or email us; for your health insurance, go to your own health insurer.
