A food truck is a vehicle, a kitchen and a point of sale all at once. Each of those three has its own cover, and together they fall under no standard policy.

In brief

You insure the vehicle with third-party and own-damage cover, the kitchen fit-out and stock as business contents, and your liability towards customers, including food safety.

There is also the pitch: at events and markets the organiser often sets requirements for your insurance, and gas safety is a condition of acceptance with virtually every insurer.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your plant and machinery insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value of the vehicle and the fit-out
  • Stock and equipment
  • Number of events per year
  • Gas system and inspection
  • Storage out of season
  • Cover and excess chosen

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Gas system and inspection

An inspected gas installation with a valid certificate is a condition. Without an inspection, the fire cover lapses.

Food safety

If a customer falls ill from your food, that is product liability. A documented HACCP plan is your defence.

Pitch and events

Organisers often require liability cover with a minimum sum insured. Ask for that requirement in advance.

The gas inspection is a condition of cover, not a formality

Virtually every insurer requires a periodically inspected gas installation with a valid certificate. If that is missing at the time of a fire, the cover can lapse: including for damage to the vehicle itself. Keep the certificate digitally and put the inspection date in the same diary as the MOT.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can a food truck go on an ordinary van policy?

No. The kitchen fit-out, the gas installation and the risk to the public call for a policy geared to them.

Is my kitchen fit-out insured?

Only as business contents, declared separately. The own-damage cover on the vehicle does not cover it.

What does an event organiser require?

Usually liability cover with a minimum sum insured. That is set out in the pitch conditions.

Is a gas inspection compulsory?

For the insurance, almost always. Without a valid certificate the fire cover can lapse.

What does an event organiser require?

Usually liability cover with a minimum sum insured. That is set out in the pitch conditions. Ask for them as soon as you register.

Is my stock insured?

Only if you declare it. At events with high turnover a seasonal increase is worthwhile; otherwise you are underinsured on precisely the busiest days.
