Electric driving and your insurance

The same forms of cover apply to an electric car as to a petrol car. The difference lies in the battery, the charging equipment and the way damage is repaired.

In brief

The basis is no different from any car: Third-party liability cover is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) as soon as the registration is in your name. On top of that you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover. The distinction that really matters with electric driving lies in three items that do not arise with a fuel car: the battery, the charging cable and the charging equipment at home.

The battery is usually the most expensive part of the car. Damage to it from a collision, fire or theft falls under the own-damage cover, just like any other part. What it does not cover is loss of capacity through normal use: a battery that gives less range after some years is wear and not damage. If the battery is leased or hired from the manufacturer, it also matters who owns it; put that to the insurer in advance.

Charging equipment follows a different track. A charge point mounted on the wall usually falls under buildings insurance. A free-standing post on your own land often does not without a separate entry. The charging cable is a popular target for thieves and is by no means included in every policy. See also what damage car insurance covers.

Three items that call for extra attention

With electric driving the difference lies not in the form of cover but in what falls within it.

Most expensive part

The battery

Covered under own-damage cover for damage, not for normal ageing.

  • Collision, fire and theft covered
  • Loss of capacity is wear
  • With a leased battery, check the ownership
  • Repair often only at a brand specialist
Accessories

Charging cable and adapters

Small in size, but often stolen and not always insured.

  • Sometimes under accessories with a limit
  • Theft from the car arranged separately
  • A cable at a public charge point is a risk
  • Keep the purchase receipt
At home

Charge point and installation

Falls under the home policy, not the car insurance.

  • Wall-mounted, usually under buildings insurance
  • Free-standing, often insured separately
  • Report it and adjust the sum insured
  • Liability when third parties charge their vehicles

What is covered

Battery damage from a collision or fireNoYes
Theft of the charging cableNoProvided that
Being stranded because the battery is flatNoProvided that

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Where electric driving comes unstuck

Two points that most often lead to a lower payout when you claim.

Battery damage is not the same as battery wear

An own-damage policy pays for sudden and unforeseen damage. If the battery is damaged in a collision, fire or theft, that falls within it. If the capacity gradually declines through charging cycles and age, that is wear and therefore excluded. The factory warranty exists for that. Likewise, inherent defect and a mechanical or electronic failure without an external cause are not covered. If the battery is leased separately, have it recorded in writing who is entitled to the payout when there is damage.

Do not forget the charging equipment at home

The charge point at your home belongs not to the car but to the building. A wallbox mounted on the wall usually falls under the buildings insurance, provided you report the installation and adjust the rebuild value accordingly. A free-standing post often counts as an outbuilding or a separate installation. If you also charge other people's cars with it, your liability under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Codecomes into play. Report these changes. The duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies in full, and a breach can cost you the payout (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price of the car: electric models are often higher
  • Engine power and weight: both count towards the rate
  • Annual mileage: more kilometres, more risk
  • No-claims years: registered in Roy-data
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
  • Additional sections: cable, breakdown assistance, replacement transport

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is the battery of my electric car covered?

As a fixed part of the car, the battery falls under the own-damage cover for collision, fire or theft. What is not covered is loss of capacity through normal use and ageing. That is wear and falls under the factory warranty. If the battery is leased separately from the manufacturer, there is a third-party owner. Have it recorded in writing in advance how that is dealt with in the policy.

Do I pay a higher premium for an electric car?

That varies a great deal by model and insurer. Electric cars often have a higher list price and greater weight and power, which pushes the premium up. Against that, some insurers give a discount for zero-emission vehicles. What remains decisive is the value of the vehicle, your no-claims years and your annual mileage. A comparison based on your own details gives the answer.

Is breakdown assistance covered when the battery is flat?

Not automatically. Many breakdown covers exclude being stranded through lack of fuel, and a flat battery is often treated the same way. Insurers that focus on electric driving increasingly do include this, sometimes with a maximum number of call-outs per year. Read the wording in the conditions and, if in doubt, ask whether running out of charge is expressly included.

What if a fire starts while charging at home?

Fire is the core cover of car, buildings and home contents insurance alike, so damage to the house and the car is covered in principle. What matters is that the charging equipment was installed soundly by a recognised installer, and that you reported it. If the cause lies in faulty installation, that is a matter between you and the installer and the insurer may seek recovery.
