Type of cover
- Limited: only named events
- Extended: fire, storm, water, burglary
- All-risks: unnamed causes as well
- Exclusions remain in place whichever form you choose
Risk · conditions · limits
A policy is only suitable once it covers the risk you do not want to carry yourself. Below you can read in which order to choose and which parts of the conditions really matter.

Choose in this order: first the risk, then the type of cover, then the provider. You determine the risk by asking yourself which event you cannot absorb financially. A broken phone is a nuisance; a fire, injury you cause to someone else or a long-running legal dispute is of a different order. For small, bearable risks a higher excess is often more sensible than wider cover.
Then you look at the type of cover and the limits. Two policies both called all-risks can differ widely in sub-limits for jewellery, audiovisual equipment, bicycles or landscaping, in cover away from the home and in the area of cover. Also consider whether there is guarantee against underinsurance ; without that guarantee you carry the risk of a sum insured that is too low yourself.
Only once the cover is settled do you compare premiums. A lower premium almost always comes from somewhere. So read the exclusions before you sign: that is the shortest route to a realistic picture of what you are buying. See also our tips for consumers.
Three elements determine whether a policy suits your situation.
The form determines which causes of loss count.
It is not the form but the amount that determines what you actually get back.
This is where you find why a claim is ultimately not paid.
What is covered
| Situation | On premium alone | On conditions |
|---|---|---|
| You know which causes of loss are covered | No | Yes |
| You know the sub-limits for valuable items | No | Yes |
| You know whether there is a guarantee against underinsurance | No | Yes |
| You know which excess applies per event | Provided that | Yes |
| You know the area of cover abroad | No | Yes |
| Wear and deferred maintenance are covered | No | No |
What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before taking out the policy.
Two points on which a policy that looks suitable still falls short.
All-risks means that unnamed causes are covered as well, not that everything is covered. Outside the policy remain intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), wear, deferred maintenance, construction and material defects, damage caused by vermin, mould and slowly penetrating damp, and damage that already existed or was foreseeable. For liability there is also always a maximum per event, and for legal expenses cover a waiting period.
A policy that suited you five years ago can be too tight now. A refurbishment, solar panels, a more expensive bicycle, letting, a business at home or a second home changes the risk and sometimes the cover as well. Report those changes: the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies when the contract is entered into and the conditions require changes to be reported. Without notification the payment can be reduced or refused (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
With the question of which loss you cannot carry yourself. Then set out the compulsory cover, health insurance and third-party liability for your motor vehicle, and look next at the risks around your home, liability and disputes. What you can absorb yourself does not have to be insured; a higher excess suits that better.
At the exclusions and the limits, not at the list of what is covered. The exclusions show where a claim founders; the sub-limits determine how much you actually get back for jewellery, equipment or bicycles. Then read the clauses on prevention, because those set requirements for locks, alarms or a safe which you have to comply with.
Not necessarily, but the difference comes from somewhere. Usually it lies in a higher excess, a more limited form of cover, lower sub-limits, a smaller area of cover or the absence of a guarantee against underinsurance. If that is a deliberate choice that suits your situation, a low premium is fine. If it is unintended, you only notice when you claim.
At any rate at a life event: moving house, moving in together, refurbishing, buying a car, starting out as self-employed or letting a home. Beyond that, a short check once a year is enough: are the sums insured still right, has duplicate cover arisen and does the excess still match your reserves?
