In brief

Most unpleasant surprises with motor claims are not about the premium, but about the difference between what people thought they had and what the policy schedule says. Three elements determine how smoothly a claim runs: assistance at the roadside, replacement transport while the car is being repaired, and the question of whether the repairer settles directly with the insurer so that you do not have to pay anything up front. None of the three is automatically included in comprehensive cover; they are choices. The forms of cover that exist are set out on the motor insurance hub page.

Just as important is the realisation that motor insurance insures the vehicle and not your day. Consequential damage such as lost working hours, a cancelled holiday or a missed appointment is not paid for. Personal belongings that were in the car generally fall under your home contents or travel insurance, not under the motor policy. And lost keys, misfuelling or a flat battery are only covered if the conditions say so in as many words.

What you can organise is that one party is responsible for handling the claim. Finass reports the claim, keeps track of the deadlines and takes up the discussion on your behalf if the payment differs from the conditions. How such a process runs step by step is set out under claims on motor insurance; our role and the complaints route are set out in the service guide.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four elements that determine how a day with a claim unfolds.

Assistance is a separate module

Towing, a mechanic at the roadside and transport of the occupants home fall under assistance, not under own-damage cover. Note the distinction between assistance after an accident and assistance in the event of a breakdown: many policies cover only the first, while the second happens more often. Also check whether the cover continues abroad and whether repatriation of the vehicle is included.

Replacement transport with or without conditions

Where it is included, a maximum period often applies, together with the requirement that the repair takes place at an approved firm. In the event of total loss the arrangement usually stops shortly after the assessor's report, when in fact you need time to buy something else. Ask how many days you have in that case.

What is excluded in any event

Outside the cover are consequential loss and loss of income, diminution in value after a successful repair, and damage caused by acts of war, nuclear reaction or seizure by the authorities. These are not the small print of one company, but standard exclusions you will find in almost every motor policy.

Report what you do not claim as well

Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report an event as soon as you are reasonably aware of it, even if you pay for the damage yourself. The other party may still come forward months later. A notification without a claim preserves your no-claims years and prevents argument about late notification.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of cover chosen: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
  • Assistance included: at home, abroad or both
  • Replacement transport: included or not, and for how many days
  • Excess: possibly reduced if you have the repair done within the network
  • No-claims years: determine your discount on the basic premium
  • Value and age of the car: count towards the cost of repair

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I always get a replacement car?

Only if that is included. Even then, a maximum period usually applies, along with a simpler class of vehicle and the condition that you have the repair done at a firm in the insurer's network. If the other party is liable, replacement transport runs through their insurer and different rules apply again. Ask in advance how it is arranged for you; afterwards the car has already gone.

Are my belongings in the car insured?

Generally not through the motor policy. A stolen laptop, child seat or set of tools falls under the home contents insurance, the travel insurance or business cover, depending on where you were and what you used the items for. Some motor policies have limited cover for personal belongings after an accident; that is an exception and not the rule.

What does it cost me to make a claim?

Also to the excess, you pay with your no-claims years. With an at-fault claim you drop a number of steps on the bonus-malus scale, which works through into the premium for several years. For small amounts, paying yourself can work out cheaper. The calculation and the step-back arrangement are explained under no-claims years and no-claims discount.

What do I do immediately after a collision?

Deal with safety first, call the emergency services if anyone is injured, and then complete a European accident statement together with the other party. Note the registration number, name and insurer, and photograph both vehicles and the situation on the road. Do not admit liability at the scene; the insurers assess who is liable by reference to the traffic rules.
