Almost every Lexus is a hybrid with a high-voltage system, and after a collision that determines who may recover, open and repair the car.

If a collision involves the battery pack, the orange-cabled high-voltage circuit or its cooling system, the car is no longer an ordinary claim. The vehicle has to be isolated by a technician trained for it, may not simply be towed or tilted, and is stored separately where there is doubt about thermal safety. Recovery, quarantine storage and reading out the system are cost items that do not appear on an ordinary repair estimate.
On top of that, the dealer network for this make is small. Transport distances are longer, parts more often come from a central warehouse and the turnaround time for a repair mounts up. The practical question then becomes whether your policy covers replacement transport, in which class and for how many days. At many insurers that is an additional module and not a standard part of the own-damage cover.
Finally, the service record plays a part. A manufacturer's scheme applies to the hybrid system, tied to a periodic check. If you have repairs carried out outside the brand channel, that does not affect your insurance but it does affect that scheme. So agree in advance where repairs are carried out; see also the general car insurance page for the types of cover.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
For damage to the underside, to the battery housing or to the cooling circuit, a fixed protocol applies. The system is disconnected and read out before anyone works on the car, and the car is stored away from other vehicles as long as the condition of the pack is unclear. So also report damage with no visible consequence, for instance after hitting a kerb or an obstacle in the road.
A limited number of workshops means a longer wait for an assessment, for parts and for calibration of the driver assistance systems. That makes the replacement transport module more important than on a make with a dealer in every region. Look not only at whether that cover is on the policy, but also at the maximum number of days and at the class of hire car. If the period runs out while your car is still in the workshop, you pay on yourself.
Insurers often send claims to an approved repairer. On a hybrid with high-voltage technology the question is whether that firm is certified for this work. If you want repairs at the franchised dealer, check whether your policy allows a free choice of repairer and what a departure costs in excess. Record that arrangement before the repair starts, because rebooking afterwards leads to delay and argument about the estimate.
Outside the cover remain: loss of capacity in the battery pack through normal ageing, which falls under the manufacturer's scheme; the cost of periodic maintenance and the annual system check; faults in electronics without an unforeseen external event; loss of value after a properly executed repair, unless that is separately insured; and storage or transport costs above the limit named in the policy. Wear to tyres, brakes and upholstery also falls outside it.
The limited dealer network means longer repair times; replacement transport therefore counts more heavily in the policy.
Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.
This is what people ask us most.
A firm certified to work on high-voltage systems. Insurers usually direct you to an approved repairer; whether you may choose yourself is set out in your policy conditions and can cost a higher excess. Where a claim involves the battery pack or the cabling, the number of suitable workshops is limited, so agree this before the car is towed away.
Only if that module is on your policy. On this make that is especially relevant, because the small dealer network and the delivery time for parts lengthen the turnaround. Watch the maximum number of days and the class of the replacement car. If the repair is not finished when that period ends, the further hire costs are at your expense.
Damage to the pack from a covered event, such as a collision, fire or hitting an obstacle, falls under the own-damage cover. Gradual loss of capacity does not; that is dealt with through the manufacturer's scheme tied to periodic checks. Also report damage to the underside with no visible consequence, because the pack is then assessed separately.
That is a matter between you and the manufacturer, not between you and the insurer. The scheme on the hybrid system depends on periodic maintenance and on where work has been carried out on the car. If you want to keep that certainty, have repairs carried out within the brand channel and check in advance whether your policy allows that choice without an extra excess.
