Insuring a DAF

Two very different vehicles fall under the DAF name: the classic passenger cars with Variomatic from Eindhoven and the lorries the make builds today. Which policy fits depends entirely on which of the two you own.

In brief

If you own a classic DAF passenger car: a 33, 44, 55 or 66 with the continuously variable Variomatic &mdash. You have a vehicle that is no longer built and whose value does not fall but is determined by condition, originality and history. In a total loss, ordinary car insurance pays the market value, and on a well-maintained classic that is almost always lower than what you have spent yourself on restoration and maintenance. A policy with a agreed value solves that.

Do you drive a DAF lorry, the vehicle falls under a different type of policy. For business use above 3,500 kilograms a lorry insurance applies, with its own provisions on load, drivers, towing and area of operation. If you drive the lorry as a hobby (a restored tractor unit or box lorry for events and runs) then a policy for hobby use is appropriate, with a mileage limit and a lower premium, but with no cover as soon as you carry goods for payment.

In both cases third-party liability cover is required by law under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). That cover pays only for the damage you cause to someone else, never damage to your own vehicle. If you want the DAF itself insured against fire, theft, storm or a collision you cause, you need third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover, preferably linked to an agreed value.

Which cover suits a DAF?

Three types of cover, with underneath them the situations that most often lead to argument on this make.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others.

  • Damage to other vehicles and injury
  • No cover for your own DAF
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Also applies while standing on the public road
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

On top of that to third-party liability, a fixed list of events such as theft, fire, storm and glass damage.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Fire, storm and hail damage
  • Damage from a collision with wild animals
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
Classic car

Own-damage cover on an agreed value

Full own-damage cover with the value fixed in advance in a valuation report.

  • Payment of the valued amount
  • No discussion about market value
  • Conditions on storage and mileage
  • Renew the valuation periodically

What makes the difference with a DAF

Four points that arise more often on this make than on an average used car.

A valuation instead of market value

With a classic DAF the question is not whether the car will be damaged, but how the value is then established. A valuation by a recognised valuer fixes the value in advance; under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code that agreed value is binding between you and the insurer, so that the rule against enrichment does not lead to a lower payment. Without a valuation the market value applies and a loss adjuster only assesses the car after the damage. Watch the period of validity: most insurers accept a report for a limited number of years and then ask for a revaluation.

Parts and repairs

For the passenger cars from the sixties and seventies, new parts are barely available from the factory. Repairs are carried out with used, exchange or reproduction parts, and that takes time. Establish in advance who may carry out repairs and whether the insurer will cooperate with a repairer of your choice instead of an approved repair firm. Also reckon on a classic car policy usually having no replacement transport and on the payment for a total loss working out higher than a repair would produce on the ordinary market.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: wear, rust and mechanical or electrical defects without a collision. A Variomatic belt that has snapped or a seized engine is not an insured event; damage during carriage for payment or other business use where the policy was taken out for private or hobby use; and damage during speed or skill events, including at a touring event. Damage through intent or recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. On a lorry it is often added that damage to your own load and damage from incorrect loading or securing do not fall under the vehicle policy.

Declaring use and where it is kept

A classic car policy and a hobby policy are cheaper because the use is limited. Insurers therefore impose conditions: a maximum number of kilometres a year, storage in an enclosed space, a minimum age for the driver and a ban on using the vehicle for commuting or business carriage. That information falls under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; if the reality differs from it, the insurer can reduce or refuse payment (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). If anything changes (different storage, more kilometres, a second driver) report it during the term.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of vehicle: passenger car or lorry
  • Agreed value: the basis for the own-damage premium
  • Nature of use: hobby, private or business
  • Annual mileage: limited use lowers the premium
  • Storage and security: an enclosed space counts in your favour
  • No-claims years and the driver's age: these determine your discount step

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does my classic DAF fall under classic car insurance?

Probably. Insurers apply an age limit that differs per company, usually somewhere between twenty-five and forty years. DAF's passenger cars are well above that. Alongside age, the insurer looks at condition, use and storage; a car driven every day often does not qualify for the more favourable classic rate.

Why is a valuation report so important?

Without a valuation the insurer pays the market value in a total loss, established after the damage. On a restored vehicle that is almost always lower than the actual market value. With a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code the amount is fixed in advance and argument afterwards is limited to whether the report was still valid and whether the vehicle matched the description.

May I carry goods with a DAF lorry insured for hobby use?

Not for payment and not for third parties. As soon as you carry goods for someone else or receive a payment for it, that is professional haulage. Separate licensing requirements and different insurance apply to that. If you do it anyway on a hobby policy, the insurer can refuse the own-damage claim. The compulsory third-party liability cover does continue to apply towards the victim, but the insurer can recover the amount paid from you.

Is a fault in the Variomatic insured?

No. Car insurance covers damage from a sudden external event. Wear to belts, clutches or the drivetrain does not fall under it, not even where the fault arises while driving and causes consequential damage. Only where the fault results from a covered event, for instance a collision or fire, does the damage qualify for payment.

What if I own several classics?

A collector's policy is often cheaper than separate policies. The vehicles are then on one contract, each with its own valued amount, with one combined mileage budget and shared conditions about storage. Insurers usually impose requirements on the space in which the collection stands, such as resistance to break-ins, fire separation and the absence of work involving fire risk.
