Klaverblad's personal insurance package
In a private package, most disputes are not about whether a payout is made but about how much. That is determined by the valuation rules, not by the name of the cover.

In brief
A package bundles the policies of one household under one contract: home contents, buildings, liability, legal expenses, motor vehicles and travel. At Klaverblad that structure is comparable to other companies'. The difference lies in the conditions of each section. Finass acts as an intermediary for several insurers and assesses for each part which conditions suit your household. The business version can be found at Klaverblad business.
For the home contents the replacement value as newapplies in principle: the amount needed to buy a comparable new item. There are two important exceptions to that. For items whose value has fallen below a certain percentage of the replacement value as new, the market value is used, and for appliances, computers and phones insurers apply depreciation tables. A six-year-old washing machine therefore yields less than its purchase price, even though the cover is unlimited in name.
You establish the level of the sum insured with a contents value calculator and to the buildings with a rebuild value calculator. If you complete it correctly, the insurer gives a guarantee against underinsurance. If an answer is wrong, that guarantee lapses and the proportionality rule arising from Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies: the payout is in proportion to the sum insured against the true value. Repeat the calculation after a refurbishment or a large purchase.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on SME insurance package.
What to look out for
Four parts of a private package where the payout differs from what people expect.
Valuables are not simply included
Jewellery, collections, musical instruments, photographic and audio equipment are subject on the home contents policy to a a maximum per category. Anything above that is not paid, however generous the total sum insured may be. For possessions you take away from home, separate valuables insurance is needed, which can also cover loss without theft.
Theft from the shed, garden and car
Outside the home, stricter requirements apply. Theft from an outbuilding or shed is usually only covered where there are signs of forced entry, and garden furniture, bicycles and tools have a maximum of their own. Almost nothing is paid for theft from a car if the items were left in view. Put valuable items away and keep purchase receipts; at a claim they are your only supporting evidence.
Water is not a single concept
A burst pipe or a leaking washing machine is insured. Damp entering gradually, penetrating or rising damp, groundwater coming up through the floor and mould growth are not. Damage caused by outstanding maintenance to the roof, gutter or window frame also remains at your own expense. Flooding after heavy rain has its own arrangement in each policy; flooding from a primary flood defence is uninsurable.
Legal expenses cover has waiting periods
Legal expenses cover does not apply to disputes that were already running or foreseeable when the policy was taken out. For certain subjects, such as employment disputes and disputes about a house you have bought, a waiting period of several months also applies. So take out cover before a dispute arises, not afterwards; see personal legal expenses insurance.
What does your premium depend on?
- Contents value and rebuild value: the basis of the two largest sections
- Postcode and construction type: thatch, timber and masonry are assessed differently
- Security of the home: locks and fittings and possibly an alarm system
- Number of sections in the package: determines the package discount scale
- Excess chosen: often set separately for storm and water
- Claims history of the household: claims in recent years are taken into account
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is paid
| Situation | Extended | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| While decorating, a full tin of paint tips over onto the sofa | No | Yes |
| The washing machine drain hose comes loose and the kitchen floor is flooded | Yes | Yes |
| Your mother-in-law trips over a loose stair runner and breaks a wrist | Yes | Yes |
| The laminate warps because of damp slowly rising from the floor | No | No |
| The wooden fence has rotted and goes down in the first autumn storm | No | No |
| Your phone slips out of your hand onto the pavement as you get out of the car | No | Provided that |
Comprehensive cover widens the causes of loss. What is finally paid still depends on the age of the damaged item.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
What is the difference between replacement value as new and market value?
Replacement value as new is the amount for a comparable new item; market value is that amount less the reduction in value through age and use. Policies pay on replacement value as new until an item has lost a certain part of its value, and on market value after that. For electronics, fixed depreciation percentages per year often apply.
I rent my home. Do I need buildings insurance?
No, the owner insures the building. You insure the contents and watch out for the tenant's improvements: the kitchen, floor, blinds or bathroom you have installed. That is neither contents nor buildings, but a separate section that you have to include expressly; otherwise you bear those costs yourself.
Do I have to report every claim?
You are required to report as soon as you are reasonably aware of it. That follows from Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code. Whether you also have the claim handled is a second question: for an amount around the excess it may be worth bearing the cost yourself. Do always report an event that could lead to a claim by someone else.
What lapses if I cancel part of the package?
The package discount is tied to the number of parts. If you cancel a section, the discount on the remaining policies can fall or lapse, so that the saving turns out smaller than expected. Have it calculated in advance what is left on balance, and check that the cancelled risk has been placed elsewhere.
