In brief
A business insurance package brings separate covers together on one policy schedule: building, business contents and stock, business interruption, glass, money, electronics, liability and legal expenses. For each section you switch on what you need. The advantage is clarity: one contract, one renewal date and one point of contact when you claim. The drawback is that a section set too low only comes to light at the moment you need it.
The most sensitive point is the sum insured. Business contents and stock are settled at replacement value as new or at market value, depending on what the conditions provide. If the sum declared is lower than the actual value, there is underinsurance and every loss is settled proportionately, however small. So if your stock expands or you buy a new machine, you must adjust the sum insured. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code also prevents you receiving more than you actually lose; overinsuring therefore only costs extra premium.
Motor vehicles do not fall under a business insurance package. Company cars, vans and plant need their own policy; see business car insurance. Finass Advies acts as an independent intermediary and compares more than thirty insurers, including Klaverblad. This insurer's wider commercial range is set out at Klaverblad business, and the general explanation at business insurance package.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.
What to look out for
Four elements of a package policy that make the difference when you claim.
Underinsurance applies proportionately
If your business contents appear on the policy at half their actual value, you receive only half even for a modest loss. That is not a penalty but the mechanics of the proportionality rule. Have the sums reviewed periodically, certainly after building work, an expansion or a rise in the value of your stock.
The indemnity period for business interruption
The business interruption section covers lost gross profit for a period chosen in advance. If you choose a period shorter than the time you actually need to rebuild and win customers back, the payments stop while your turnover is still below par. See business interruption insurance.
Prevention requirements are conditions of cover
The policy schedule often sets requirements on burglary resistance, fire extinguishers, periodic electrical inspection or the storage of flammable waste. If you do not meet them at the time of the loss, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout. Treat those clauses as a maintenance obligation and record what you have done.
Liability is not included automatically
A package covers your own property. Damage you cause to others requires a separate section; see public and employers' liability insurance. Advisory errors and other pure financial loss fall outside that as well and belong on professional indemnity cover.
What does your premium depend on?
- Sum insured per section: business contents, stock, building and business interruption separately
- Construction type of the building: masonry, timber or prefabricated, and the fire compartmentation
- Sector and activities: a metalworker has a different fire risk from an office
- Security and prevention: burglary class, sprinkler, fire alarm and inspections
- Indemnity period chosen: a longer business interruption period costs more premium
- Excess per section: often adjustable separately
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| During a burglary the till drawer with the day's takings is taken | No | Provided that |
| A shop window is broken by a branch snapping off in a storm | Provided that | Yes |
| A lightning strike destroys the till systems and the network equipment | Provided that | Yes |
| The freezer fails over the weekend and the stock spoils | No | Provided that |
| A fire in the neighbouring premises spreads to your warehouse | Yes | Yes |
| A production machine seizes because a bearing has worn out over the years | No | No |
Each section has its own sum insured. That ultimately determines what is left of your claim.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
What is excluded as standard on a business insurance package?
Flooding caused by the failure or overtopping of a primary flood defence, earthquake and volcanic eruption, and damage from nuclear reactions, civil commotion or acts of war. Also wear and tear, gradually operating influences, inherent defects and deferred maintenance. Damage you cause intentionally or through reckless conduct falls outside the cover; Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code is the statutory basis for that. Motor vehicles also fall outside the package.
Is it better to insure at replacement value as new or at market value?
Replacement value as new gives you the cost of a comparable new item and is usually the starting point for business contents. Once an item has fallen sharply in value, the conditions often switch automatically to market value. That matters for equipment that dates quickly: check from what point that switch takes place and whether a separate electronics section is worthwhile.
What should I do when my business grows?
Report changes as they happen. A larger stock, extra machines, an extension or a second site changes the risk and the sums required. Do not wait until renewal. Some policies include temporary extension cover for newly acquired items, but it applies only briefly and up to a limited amount; after that the change must still be reported.
Is legal expenses cover part of the package?
Only if you include that section. Commercial legal expenses insurance (rechtsbijstandverzekering) handles disputes with suppliers, customers, staff or your landlord, and works with a waiting period during which existing disputes are excluded. See business legal expenses insurance for the structure and the usual limitations.
