Insuring an inflatable boat, RIB and tender

A RIB or tender is on a trailer within five minutes and then gone. That is why security on these boats is not advice but an underwriting condition.

In brief

You insure RIBs, inflatable boats and tenders with liability and own-damage cover, but the pattern of claims here lies elsewhere than on a boat kept permanently at a jetty. The dominant risk is the whole thing being taken away: the boat, the outboard motor and the trailer disappear in one movement. Insurers therefore focus above all on the security and on where the craft is kept outside the season.

Many tenders do not sail independently but belong to a larger yacht. Including them on the pleasure craft insurance of the mother vessel is then almost always the better route. Do make sure the cover continues when the tender is used away from the mother vessel, for example to take guests ashore. That is exactly the moment when something happens.

Everything to do with ageing remains excluded. UV damage to the tubes, softened glued seams, an air chamber that slowly develops a leak and a motor with deferred maintenance fall outside every policy. Because of its favourable power-to-weight ratio, a RIB is also quickly assessed as a fast boat, with the corresponding requirements on qualifications.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Security is a condition of cover

For this category insurers generally prescribe an approved motor lock, together with a hitch lock or wheel clamp on the trailer and, at higher values, a tracking system. Register the hull number and the motor's serial number, and photograph both. If the prescribed lock is missing at the moment of the theft, that is not an aggravating detail but a condition not met, and the question of cover does not even arise.

The tender as a tender: record the use

If the tender is included on the yacht's policy, check three things. Does the cover also apply when it sails independently, does it also apply when a guest or crew member is at the helm, and does it also apply when the tender is left ashore or at a jetty while the mother vessel departs. If one of those three is missing, a gap opens up at the very moment when you need the cover most.

Tubes age, and that is not damage

Hypalon and PVC harden under the influence of sun and salt. Seams come apart, an air chamber goes down and the tube fades. All of those count as gradual processes and are covered nowhere. Only a sudden cause, such as a tear from a collision or vandalism, falls under the own-damage cover. Store the boat covered, rinse it after use in salt water and keep maintenance invoices to head off the discussion about deferred maintenance.

A different policy applies on the trailer

As long as the trailer is coupled behind your car, liability towards others runs with the third-party cover of that towing vehicle. That is the link made by Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). Your motor insurer does not cover damage to the boat itself during transport. Check whether your boat policy includes road transport and launching, and whether the trailer is listed as a separate object; otherwise it is uninsured after a theft.

Power and speed

A RIB with a powerful motor is assessed as a fast boat, with the corresponding requirements on boating licences and the liability limit.

The sailing area is a hard boundary

Inland waters, wide inland waters and coastal waters are separate categories with their own premiums. If you sail onto the IJsselmeer or the Wadden Sea with inland waters cover, you are not insured there, whatever the weather. For a one-off trip you apply for a temporary extension; that is usually a phone call.

Pleasure craft insurance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value of the boat, the motor and the trailer. These three are assessed and declared as separate objects.
  • Engine power. With a favourable power-to-weight ratio, the regime for fast boats applies.
  • Security. A motor lock, trailer security and a tracking system lower the premium or are a condition.
  • Storage location. A locked shed, your own yard or an unsupervised site makes a considerable difference.
  • Sailing area. Inland waters, wider inland waters or coastal waters; outside that area there is no cover.
  • Independent use or as a tender. Inclusion on the yacht policy is assessed differently from a separate policy.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I include my tender on the yacht's policy?

Often yes, and that is usually cheaper than a separate policy. Do have it expressly recorded that the cover continues when the tender sails independently and when someone other than you is operating it. Without that provision, cover applies only while the tender is on board or attached to the mother vessel, and that is not the moment when the damage occurs.

Is a leaking tube covered?

Only where there is a sudden cause. If an air chamber goes down through a tear after a collision or through vandalism, that falls under the own-damage cover. If the material becomes porous after years of sun and salt, the seams come apart or a valve turns out to be worn, that is ageing and therefore excluded. On older boats a surveyor looks at that first on every claim.

Who covers damage during transport on the trailer?

For damage you cause to others on the way, the third-party cover of the towing car applies as long as the trailer is coupled. That motor insurance does not cover damage to the boat itself: for that, your boat policy has to include road transport. Check that before the first journey, and check whether launching and lifting out are covered too.

Only the outboard motor has been stolen. What now?

That is a covered own-damage claim, provided the motor appears on the policy schedule and the prescribed motor lock was fitted. Report it to the police with the serial number. Without that number the motor cannot be registered as stolen and the claim becomes difficult. Keep the motor's purchase invoice separately from the boat's, because the two are valued separately.
