In brief

Every motor vehicle used on public roads is subject to the insurance requirement under Article 2 of the WAM.

What this cover does not do is protect your own stock. If you are involved in a collision with a stock vehicle, the other party is compensated; damage to the vehicle in your own trading stock is covered under motor trade stock insurance or garage insurance for motor traders. Ook diefstal, brand en hagel op het terrein horen daar thuis, niet bij de plaat.

Calculate per plate, not per vehicle. Each plate you want to use at the same time is a separate insured object with its own premium and claims history. You can read about the conditions governing use of the plate under trade plate insurance.

Through Finass or directly from the insurer?

The cover is structured in three parts, followed by an overview for each situation.

Third-party liability insurance (WA)

Third-party liability insurance (WA) is legally required and covers damage you cause to others with your car, but not damage to your own car.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Personal injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by occupants

Third-party liability + limited comprehensive cover

In addition to third-party liability cover, this also protects against damage to your own car caused by external events that you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Broken windows and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most comprehensive cover, including damage to your own car, theft and total loss. We compare Ansvar Idea's comprehensive option with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage caused by you
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown responsible party

This overview concerns our services, not the cover. The actual cover is set out in the policy conditions and the insurer's insurance product information document; you will receive both before taking out the policy.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The cover is tied to the plate, not the chassis number

This is the difference compared with ordinary car insurance. The policy does not list the registration number of a specific vehicle; it lists a trade plate registration. The vehicle displaying the plate at that time is insured. If you move the plate three times a day, the cover moves with it. This also means that you do not need to add or remove any vehicle, but you do need to know exactly where each plate is.

Own damage to vehicles in your stock is not included

Trade plate insurance is essentially liability cover: it pays for damage you cause to someone else. If you dent one of your own stock vehicles during a test drive, that is your loss and is not covered by the trade plate insurance. If you want the vehicles themselves to be covered, you need cover for your motor trade stock, with an amount that changes in line with the actual stock level and is adjusted retrospectively.

You cannot use one plate for two cars at the same time

A plate can only be displayed on one vehicle at a time. If you want two employees to move stock vehicles at the same time, you need two plates and therefore two insured items. In practice, businesses that underestimate this pass a plate from one person to another, and that is precisely the situation in which it cannot subsequently be established which vehicle was insured. Count how many journeys you actually make at the same time and insure that number.

A missing plate remains your risk

If a plate is lost or stolen, report it immediately to the RDW and your insurer. If someone else causes damage using your plate, the injured third party will, under Article 2 of the WAM be compensated in any event; the insurer will then seek recovery, and as the holder you will be the first person it approaches. Store plates as securely as valuable documents and record who takes each one.

What determines your premium?

  • Number of trade plate registrations — Each plate you use at the same time counts as a separate insured item.
  • Types of vehicles in stock — Cars, vans, motorcycles or heavy machinery have different claims profiles.
  • Selected type of cover — Liability only, or liability with cover for vehicles in stock.
  • Authorised drivers — Your own employees only, or also customers taking an unaccompanied test drive.
  • Claims history for each plate — Claim-free years are recorded for each trade plate registration, not for each business.
  • Sum insured and excess — The statutory minimum amount is a lower limit; many businesses deliberately choose a higher amount.

Insurers assess these details differently. That is why it pays to compare.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are most frequently asked about this.

Does the green number plate insure the vehicle or the plate?

The plate. The policy lists the dealer number plate, not a car's chassis number. The vehicle displaying the plate at that time is insured for third-party liability. This means that you do not need to register and deregister stock vehicles individually, but you must be able to demonstrate which vehicle was displaying the plate when the damage occurred.

Is damage to the stock vehicle itself covered?

Not under the plate's third-party liability cover. This pays for damage you cause to others. For damage to the cars in your own stock, including theft, fire and hail damage on the premises, you need cover for your vehicle stock. This usually uses a variable insured amount and a subsequent premium adjustment based on the actual stock level.

How many plates do I need to insure?

As many as you use at the same time. A plate can only be displayed on one vehicle at a time, so two journeys at the same time require two plates. Insure the actual number rather than borrowing one; in the event of a collision, you must be able to demonstrate which plate was displayed on which vehicle, and that is the first question that will be asked.

What should I do if a plate is stolen?

Report it immediately to the RDW and your insurer, and report it to the police. If someone else causes damage using your plate, the injured party will, pursuant to Article 2 of the WAM be compensated in any event. The insurer will then seek recovery and will first look to you as the registered holder. A report made before the damage occurs makes that discussion considerably shorter.
