Saving: what to look out for

We insure; we do not offer savings accounts and do not act as intermediary in them. What we do here is explain how to assess a savings product and how a buffer relates to your insurance.

In brief

Saving is intended for spending you can see coming and for setbacks you want to be able to bear yourself. A savings account is not an investment: the amount does not fall in value, but its purchasing power can decline with inflation. A provider promising a high and guaranteed return is not offering a savings product.

Finass Verzekert advises on and arranges non-life insurance. Savings products fall under a different licence category. We do not open accounts, give no savings advice and recommend no bank. We only explain which features to compare and what protection applies by law.

Where saving and insuring meet is the excess. Anyone with a reserve can deliberately opt for a higher excess and so save on premium. Anyone without that reserve had better not. That is precisely the conversation we can have with you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that determine whether your savings do what you expect of them.

Know which guarantee scheme applies

The Dutch deposit guarantee scheme applies to banks with a Dutch licence and guarantees balances up to a statutory maximum per person per bank. If you save through a platform with a foreign bank, the scheme of that country and a different supervisory authority apply. Look that up before you transfer money, not afterwards.

Promotional rates and access to your money

An attractive rate often applies only temporarily, only to new money or only up to a certain balance. With a fixed-term deposit your money is tied up and you pay a penalty for early withdrawal. So do not judge the rate but the combination of rate, term and whether you need to be able to get at the money unexpectedly.

Saving does not replace insurance

A buffer covers small setbacks; insurance covers what you cannot bear yourself. For risks such as liability, fire or a collision, saving is no alternative, because the amount can run up without limit. Conversely, it is unnecessary to insure small losses: you would then be paying premium for something you can absorb yourself.

A reserve changes your policy

With a buffer you can increase the excess and reduce the premium. Bear in mind, though, that certain damage is never covered, whatever your excess: wear and tear, deferred maintenance and gradually acting influences fall outside cover, and 7:952 DCC excludes damage through intent and recklessness.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Guarantee scheme: which country and which supervisory authority stand behind the bank
  • Access to your money: freely withdrawable or fixed, and subject to what penalty
  • Conditions attached to the rate: whether it applies only to new money or only temporarily
  • Balance limits: whether the rate changes above a certain amount
  • Size of your buffer: determines what excess you can bear
  • The provider's licence: check the party in the public register of the AFM or DNB

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does Finass Verzekert act as intermediary in savings accounts?

No. We advise and act as intermediary solely in general insurance. Savings products fall under a different licence category, which we do not hold. We do not open accounts, give no savings advice and recommend no bank. For your insurance and for setting your excess, you can come to us.

What does the deposit guarantee scheme guarantee?

It guarantees balances at a bank with a Dutch licence up to a statutory maximum per person per bank, where that bank can no longer meet its obligations. It does not cover investments and does not cover a loss of value through inflation. With foreign providers, the scheme of the country of establishment applies.

How large should my buffer be?

There is no generally applicable figure for that. It depends on your fixed outgoings, the security of your income and the state of your home and car. A workable rule of thumb is that you should be able to absorb unexpected expenditure and the excess on your policies without borrowing. We are happy to work the latter through with you.

Can I reduce my premium with a buffer?

Often yes. With most general insurance, a higher excess reduces the premium. You then pay for small losses yourself and insure only what you cannot bear. Whether that is sensible depends on your reserve and your claims history. We set the variants side by side for you.

Is saving risk-free?

In nominal terms your balance does not change, but its purchasing power can decline with inflation. You also run a counterparty risk, which the guarantee scheme covers up to a statutory maximum. Anyone saving above that maximum can spread the amount across several banks. We give no advice on that.

Does your excess match your buffer?

We compare the offerings of several insurers and match the cover and excess to what you can bear yourself.
