With a truck, the vehicle, the body and the load are three different insurances, and the most expensive of the three is usually not on the lorry policy.

The motor insurance on a truck covers liability under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and, if you choose it, the vehicle itself. What is in or on it is not included. Goods you carry for someone else are damage to the load and belong with carrier's liability insurance, where the CMR Convention or the AVC conditions determine the extent of your liability.
The third element is the structure. A lorry-mounted crane, a tipper, a refrigeration unit, a hook lift or a tanker body often represents a considerable part of the value and has its own risk profile. Damage caused with a lorry-mounted crane while the vehicle is stationary is, moreover, not automatically traffic damage; working-risk cover is needed for that.
You also carry the risk relating to staff. You are liable for damage your driver causes to third parties under Article 6:170 of the Dutch Civil Code, and for their own injury in traffic the duty of care under Article 7:611 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies. We assess the truck product through Turien & Co against these dividing lines.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Third-party liability insurance is compulsory by law and covers damage you cause to others with your lorry, not damage to your own lorry.
Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.
The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Turien & Co's comprehensive version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
If the vehicle overturns and the entire load is lost, the own-damage cover pays for the vehicle and nothing for the goods. Your liability as a carrier is limited by the CMR Convention for international transport and by the AVC conditions within the Netherlands, but that liability does have to be insured. If you carry your own goods, own-account transit cover or goods-in-transit insurance is the appropriate form.
A lorry-mounted crane setting a load down on the pavement causes damage while the vehicle is stationary. Whether that falls under the WAM cover or under your business liability insurance depends on whether the vehicle was functioning at that moment as a piece of equipment or as a motor vehicle. Without express working-risk cover you end up between two policies. Have that fit checked in advance.
A coupled trailer or semi-trailer runs with the towing vehicle for liability purposes, but own damage to the trailer itself does not. Every trailer, semi-trailer and swap body should be on the policy with its own registration number. If you change equipment regularly or hire in temporarily, have an arrangement included that covers this instead of having to notify each time.
Carriage of dangerous goods under ADR, abnormal loads and journeys outside the area declared are not automatically covered. Collisions with a viaduct or canopy because of the declared vehicle height also lead to discussion. Report the type of transport, the maximum height and the operating area when you take out the policy; a departure from it affects the description of the risk and therefore the cover.
Replacement transport after a claim Stay mobile with replacement transport.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
No. Own-damage cover covers the vehicle, not the goods in it. If you carry for third parties, you need carrier's liability insurance; your liability is then limited under CMR or the AVC conditions. If you carry your own goods, there is no liability but there is your own loss, and own-account transit or goods-in-transit cover exists for that. These two forms are not interchangeable.
Your business, under Article 6:170 of the Dutch Civil Code. Recovery from the driver themselves is only possible in cases of intent or wilful recklessness, because Article 7:661 DCC protects them otherwise. That means your drivers' claims record feeds straight into your premium and that it pays to record driving behaviour and instruction, including towards your insurer.
Not through the third-party liability cover; that is there for third parties. For injury to your own driver in traffic, the duty of care under Article 7:611 of the Dutch Civil Code applies, which requires you to arrange proper insurance. You arrange that with occupants' insurance or employer's liability cover for motor vehicles. Without that cover the claim lands directly with your business.
The third-party liability cover applies within the area on the green card. For own-damage cover, recovery and a replacement vehicle that is a separate agreement, and with a lorry those costs are high: recovering an overturned combination, transhipping the load and clearing the road quickly mount up. Have it recorded whether recovery and clearance costs are covered.
