Luggage · medical expenses · repatriation
A travel insurance is not a single product but a collection of separate covers. Which of them are on your policy determines whether you really get help when things go wrong abroad.

A travel insurance consists of modules. The basis is almost always luggage, assistance and extraordinary costs: the costs that arise when your trip turns out differently from planned, such as a longer stay after illness, transport home or a family member travelling out to you. Alongside that you choose modules for medical expenses, accidents, legal expenses cover while travelling, winter sports and special sports. With most insurers, cancellation is a separate cover.
For medical expenses an important principle applies: your Dutch health insurance is the first payer. Abroad it usually pays up to the Dutch rate at most. The medical expenses module on the travel insurance tops up the difference, covers emergency dental treatment within a limit and pays the costs the health insurer does not recognise. Without that module, a hospital admission outside Europe remains largely at your expense.
In practice the emergency assistance centre is the most important cover. It arranges admission, repatriation with or without a medical escort, a replacement vehicle and contact with the treating doctors. Always call the centre before you arrange anything yourself; costs submitted afterwards are often only partly paid. Also report a loss as soon as reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires. See also whether travel insurance is worth it.
Three blocks that make up virtually every travel policy.
Loss, theft and damage to items you take with you.
A supplement to what your health insurance pays abroad.

What is covered
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| Theft of a suitcase from a hotel room | Yes | Yes |
| Emergency medical treatment abroad | Provided that | Yes |
| Repatriation after an accident | Yes | Yes |
| Cancellation of the trip through illness beforehand | No | Provided that |
| An accident while skiing or snowboarding | No | Provided that |
| Damage from taking part in a speed competition | No | No |
What is actually covered, including limits per item, the excess and exclusions, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) you receive before taking out cover.
Four points that make the difference between a payment and a refusal.
The sum insured for luggage says little; what matters are the sub-limits. For jewellery, watches, photographic and computer equipment there is almost always a separate maximum payment per item or per trip. Payment is usually on market value, not on replacement value as new. Valuables covered at home by a separate policy are often better covered while travelling through that policy than through the travel insurance.
Recurring exclusions are: luggage left unattended and items lying visibly in a car, damage caused by alcohol or drugs, taking part in speed contests, and intent and recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. Trips to areas with a negative travel advisory are also usually outside the cover, as is damage resulting from a pre-existing medical condition which you did not declare.
Skiing, snowboarding, diving, mountain walking above a certain altitude and climbing are not covered as standard. Insurers have a module for winter sports and a module for special sports. Beyond that, a hard core remains excluded: mountain sports without a marked route, air sports such as parachuting and paragliding, and professional sport. Check for each sport how the conditions describe it; the descriptions differ by insurer.
If you cause damage to someone else while travelling, that is a matter for your liability insurance, not for the travel policy; watch the territorial scope of that policy. Damage with a car, motorhome or hired scooter runs through that vehicle's insurance, in the Netherlands under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and abroad through the local compulsory insurance. A travel insurance replaces neither.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Abroad, the health insurance usually pays up to the Dutch rate at most. In countries with high healthcare costs that covers a small part of the bill. The health insurance moreover does not pay for repatriation, a longer stay or a replacement vehicle. It is precisely those extraordinary costs and the assistance that are the reason for taking out travel insurance.
No, with virtually all insurers that is a separate cover or a separate policy. The travel insurance covers what happens during the trip; cancellation insurance covers the costs if you have to call the trip off beforehand or break it off early. Take out cancellation cover shortly after booking: events that were already an issue before then are not covered.
Usually yes, but subject to a separate sub-limit that is lower than the replacement value as new. Payment is often on market value, and for theft a police report is required. If the device was left unattended or lay visibly in a car, no payment follows. For expensive equipment, valuables insurance is usually the better route.
Call the emergency assistance centre first, at night as well. It assesses the treatment, gives the hospital a guarantee of payment and, where necessary, arranges transport or repatriation. If you arrange it yourself and submit the invoice afterwards, the payment may be limited. Keep all original invoices, statements from the treating doctors and the police report in the event of theft.
Only with the winter sports module. Without that module, accidents and damage to equipment while skiing, snowboarding and doing related activities are excluded. Even with the module, unguided off-piste use, speed competitions and professional participation remain excluded in many policies. Read how your conditions describe the sport exactly before you depart.
Request a quote without obligation; we match the territorial scope, the modules and the sports cover to your travel pattern.
