A tender on the pleasure craft insurance

A tender is insured in one of two ways: as an independent craft with its own policy, or as a tender on the policy of the mother vessel. That choice determines when you are and are not covered.

In brief

If the tender is included on the yacht's policy, that cover often applies only while the tender is on board, hangs in the davits or is used in the immediate vicinity of the mother vessel. If you use it independently, for example to go ashore or onto other waters, cover can lapse. Read that provision before you assume the tender is covered.

With a your own policy the tender has its own sailing area, its own sum insured and its own liability limit. That is the logical choice for a tender of substantial value or with a powerful outboard motor, and where it is used away from a mother vessel. The policy then consists of the same sections as any pleasure craft insurance: liability, own-damage cover and personal accident cover for those on board.

You set the sum insured on the basis of the purchase value or a valuation report. A valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code makes the amount binding for an agreed term. State the outboard motor separately with its make, type, power and serial number. See also the general pleasure craft insurance.

What does insurance for a tender cover?

Three components that you choose separately, with an overview per situation below.

Liability

Liability

Damage you cause to others with the vessel.

  • Collision and jetty damage
  • No legal obligation
  • Often required by the marina
The vessel itself

Own-damage cover

Damage to the boat, the engine and the fixed equipment.

  • Fire, storm and sinking
  • Theft
  • Collision and grounding

There is no statutory insurance requirement for pleasure craft; the WAM applies only to motor vehicles. Marinas, harbours and hire companies do generally require liability cover. Pay attention to the sailing area described and to the lay-up or winter storage period: outside the sailing area or during undeclared storage, cover may lapse.

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong with tenders

Four points that determine whether the policy actually pays out in the event of a claim.

Included on the yacht's policy is not the same as insured

If the tender appears as a tender on the mother vessel's policy, cover is usually limited to use in the immediate vicinity of that vessel, or to the period during which the tender is on board or in the davits. If you take it out independently, you fall outside that description. A maximum amount for the tender and a separate limit for the motor often apply as well. A policy of its own is clearer as soon as the tender is used independently or represents a substantial value.

The outboard motor is the theft risk

A detachable motor is the most frequently stolen component on the water. Insurers cover theft subject to conditions: a certified motor lock, mounting with security bolts and storage on a locked site or on board. If the tender lies unattended at a jetty, cover is often narrower. State the make, type, year of build, power and serial number, and keep the purchase invoice with your policy documents; without proof of ownership the loss is hard to prove.

Sailing area and lifting on board

The policy schedule states where you may sail: inland waters, a wider area including coastal waters, or abroad. If you sail outside it, there is no cover, not even for liability. If the mother vessel travels abroad, check that the tender is included in the same extension. Note the lifting and launchingtoo: damage that occurs while putting the tender on board with davits or a crane is not covered on every policy, and where lifting eyes or slings break it sometimes falls under the exclusion for faults in materials.

Storage, maintenance and your own obligations

In the winter storage a lay-up period with limited cover applies; frost damage because the engine or the cooling system has not been drained is not covered. Damage during transport by road is not automatically covered and the trailer itself is never covered by the boat policy. Osmosis, corrosion, rot, wear and tear and deferred maintenance are covered nowhere, and neither is hire without declaring it or sailing without the required boating licence. Damage caused deliberately or recklessly is excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code); state the use and mooring correctly (Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code) and report a claim in good time (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • Insured value — purchase value or valuation
  • Engine power and speed — this determines the risk class
  • Independent or as a tender — its own policy or included
  • Sailing area — inland waters, coastal waters or abroad
  • Security and storage — an engine lock and an enclosed site
  • Type of cover and excess — liability only or own-damage cover as well

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is my tender covered on the yacht's policy?

Only if the tender appears on the policy schedule with a description and a value, and then often with restrictions. Many insurers cover the tender only while it is on board, hangs in the davits or is used in the immediate vicinity of the mother vessel. If you use it independently, a policy of its own is generally the better solution.

When should I choose a separate tender policy?

As soon as the tender is used away from the mother vessel, has a powerful outboard motor or represents a substantial value. With its own policy the tender has its own sailing area, its own sum insured and its own liability limit. Cover as a tender on another policy often involves a maximum amount and a separate ceiling for the motor.

Is the outboard motor covered against theft?

Only if it appears on the policy with its make, type and serial number and the security requirements have been met: usually a certified motor lock and mounting with security bolts. If the tender lies unattended at a jetty, cover is often narrower than when it is on board or on a locked site. Ask about that condition specifically.

Is damage during lifting on board covered?

That varies greatly from policy to policy. Some insurers include lifting and launching with davits or a crane, others exclude it. If a lifting eye or a sling breaks, the exclusion for faults in materials and construction may apply. Have it recorded how the tender is taken on board and check whether that operation falls within the cover.

What applies during transport and winter storage?

Damage during transport on a trailer is not automatically covered; that varies from policy to policy. You insure the trailer itself separately or through the trailer cover on your motor insurance. During the lay-up period, cover remains limited to events such as fire, storm and theft, and frost damage because the motor has not been drained is excluded.
