Insuring a hire car
As soon as you lend your car to other people for payment, that is hire. Including through a sharing platform. An ordinary car insurance policy excludes it, without exception.

In brief
With hire, a changing, unknown driver is driving your car. That is a fundamentally different risk from private use, and standard policies therefore exclude it.
Do you rent out through a sharing platform, that platform often provides cover of its own during the hire period. Check exactly what it covers, what the excess is and what applies between two hires.
This page deals with one part. The overview of all parts is on the the main car insurance page.
What to look out for
Platform cover is not always complete
Read what happens on a total loss, a theft or damage with no other party, and what excess the hirer bears.
Between rentals
During the period when the car is not hired out, the platform cover usually does not apply. Your own policy has to be watertight then.
No-claims years
Damage during hire can affect your own bonus-malus. Ask how the platform and the insurer deal with that.
Hiring out regularly is running a business
If you hire the car out regularly, it is a business activity with a policy of its own and possibly liability cover.
What determines the premium
- List price
- Frequency of renting out
- Type of hirers
- Annual mileage
- Cover and excess chosen
This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Frequently asked questions
May I hire out my car on my own insurance?
No. Hire for payment is excluded on standard policies, including hire through a sharing platform.
Is the platform's cover sufficient?
Often during the hire period it is, but check the excess and what applies on a total loss or theft.
What applies between two hires?
Your own policy then applies. Make sure it connects, otherwise a gap arises.
Does damage during hire affect my no-claims years?
It can. Ask in advance how the platform and the insurer record the claim.
