In brief

With virtually every insurer, air sports appear in the same list as mountain sports, diving below your certified depth and speed events: excluded unless arranged separately. Parachute jumping falls under that heading beyond argument, whether you jump solo or hang tandem from an instructor.

The difference between tandem and solo can matter for acceptance. Some insurers will include a one-off tandem jump at a recognised parachute centre, while solo jumping, formation jumping and wingsuit flying remain outside any cover.

Think about your life and disability insuranceas well. When you take out the policy, Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies: you have to declare a risk sport if you are asked about it. If you do not, the insurer can invoke Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What is covered with parachute jumping?

Three policies come into play at once: travel, accident and life or AOV.

Travel

Medical expenses

Air sports are generally excluded on the travel policy.

  • Report in advance and have it confirmed
  • Even for a single jump
  • Call the emergency assistance centre in the event of injury
Accidents

Disability and death

The most serious consequences sit precisely in this section.

  • Mind the air sports exclusion
  • Tandem sometimes, solo not
  • Check the scale of benefits
Life and AOV

Acceptance and declaration

A risk sport belongs in the health declaration.

  • Duty of disclosure, Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code
  • Consequence of non-disclosure: Article 7:930 DCC
  • Sometimes a surcharge or a clause

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine whether anything is paid after a jumping accident.

Air sport is an exclusion, not a grey area

The standard exclusions are air sports, mountain sports off the beaten track, diving below your certified depth and speed contests. Parachute jumping falls under the first of these, even if you go up as the passenger of an instructor. A single jump during a holiday is no less excluded than a whole season.

Parachuting and skydiving

The waiver you sign at the parachute centre deals with something else

Before a jump you sign that you accept the risks. That limits your ability to hold the centre liable under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code, but it says nothing about your own policy. Your cover depends solely on what you declared in advance and what the insurer accepted.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the sport — air sports are in the highest
  • Tandem or solo — acceptance varies widely
  • Number of jumps per year — one-off or as a regular sport
  • Licence and experience — training through a recognised centre
  • Sums insured — mainly for disability and death
  • Recreational or in competition — competitions are almost always excluded

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is a tandem jump insured?

Not automatically. Tandem also counts as an air sport. Some insurers will include a one-off jump at a recognised parachute centre once you declare it in advance; ask for written confirmation before you book.

What happens if I do not report it?

Then there is no cover for the consequences of the jump: no medical costs, no disability payment and no repatriation. With life insurance and an AOV, non-disclosure can also lead to a reduction in the payment.

Does the exclusion apply to my life insurance as well?

That depends on the policy. Many life insurers ask about risk sports and then impose a surcharge or a clause. Declare it when you take out the policy; Article 7:928 DCC obliges you to do so.

Is the parachute centre liable in the event of an accident?

Only if the centre is at fault, under Article 6:162 DCC. The waiver you sign limits that possibility. Your own cover is separate from this and follows from your policy conditions.

Are you going to jump?

Have it established in advance what your policy does; we find out which insurer accepts air sports.
