Para-skiing and your insurance

In paraskiing you descend on skis while hanging beneath a small canopy. That touches the mountain sports exclusion and the air sports exclusion at the same time.

In brief

Paraskiing, also known as speed riding, combines two things that insurers already exclude separately. You ski in unpatrolled terrain off the piste and you fly with a canopy over rock faces and steep slopes. As a result the sport is hardly ever part of standard cover.

That makes the assessment after an accident straightforward and unfavourable. Even if an insurer were to accept off-piste skiing, the flying element remains air sports, and the other way round. So you do not need one extension but two, and that combination is rarely offered.

What can be arranged varies greatly by insurer and often by application. Declare before you leave exactly what you intend to do, use the Dutch description and have the answer confirmed in writing . A course at a recognised school helps with the assessment.

What is covered with paraskiing?

Two exclusions and an expensive rescue operation set the picture.

Mountain sports

The skiing element

You move outside the patrolled piste.

  • The winter sports module covers the piste
  • The avalanche and fall risk remains
  • Closed terrain always excluded
Air sports

The flying element

The canopy makes it an air sport.

  • A separate exclusion in the policy
  • An AVP often excludes aircraft
  • A licence or course required
In an accident

Recovery in steep terrain

A rescue on a steep slope often calls for a helicopter.

  • Costs of mitigating the loss are a separate section
  • Call the emergency assistance centre first
  • Keep the report and the invoices

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that come up almost every time with this combined sport.

Two exclusions at once, two extensions needed

The standard exclusions are mountain sports off the beaten track, air sports, diving below your certified depth and speed contests. Paraskiing falls under the first two of these. A winter sports extension alone is therefore not enough, and an air sports clause alone is not either.

Heliskiing and freeriding

Flying above a ski area also creates liability

If you hit a skier, a lift cable or a building, your liability is assessed under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Your AVP, however, often excludes damage caused with an aircraft. If you fly despite a ban by the ski area, Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code comes on top of that: deliberate recklessness is not covered.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Risk class of the sport — a combination of two high classes
  • Training and licence — a course at a recognised school
  • Guidance — with an instructor or alone
  • Destination — the Alps or further afield
  • Sums insured — above all for rescue costs and disability
  • Recreational or in competition — competitions are ruled out

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does paraskiing come under winter sports cover?

No. That module is meant for skiing and snowboarding on open pistes. Paraskiing takes place off the piste and with a canopy; both elements fall under an exclusion in most policies.

Is no cover at all possible, then?

Sometimes it is, but it is tailor-made and assessed case by case. State exactly what you intend to do, where and with what training, and have the insurer's answer confirmed in writing.

Who pays for the mountain rescue?

Only your insurer, if rescue costs appear in the policy and the sport has been accepted. Otherwise the deployment of rescuers and a helicopter is entirely at your own expense; in steep terrain that is the largest item.

What if I hit a skier?

You may then be liable under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. Your liability insurance often excludes damage caused with an aircraft, so you would have to bear that claim yourself. Ask about club cover.

Are you going paraskiing?

Have it established before departure what is genuinely covered; we put your situation to the insurers that assess this sport.
