What your health insurance does

Abroad, the basic health insurance pays up to the Dutch rateat most. In countries with higher healthcare costs that covers only part.

What it does not cover is repatriation: medical transport back to the Netherlands. With a hospital admission and an escort, that costs tens of thousands of euros.

What travel insurance adds

Repatriation and the emergency assistance centre that arranges it. That is the main reason for this policy.

In addition there is luggage, although that cover is limited and valuables carry a sub-limit.

And liability abroad, where your personal policy does not cover that country.

Continuous or single-trip

If you travel more than three weeks a year, continuous cover is usually the better value. For a single holiday, single-trip cover is cheaper.

With continuous cover, watch the maximum number of consecutive travel days; a long trip can fall outside it.

What you must report

High-risk sports such as diving, climbing and winter sports are rarely covered as standard. Declare them before departure; afterwards is not possible.
