Insuring an unoccupied house
When a property stands empty, most insurers limit cover to fire, storm and lightning. That is a considerable difference.

What changes
After a period standing empty — often two to three months — cover lapses for burglary, vandalism and water damage under most policies.
What remains is fire, storm and lightning. That is precisely not what an empty property is vulnerable to.
What you must report
Report the vacancy yourself. If you conceal it and damage occurs, the payout may be refused under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code, even for a cause unconnected with it.
For a home that is up for sale or to let, a vacancy arrangement with wider cover is possible for an additional premium.
Frost is the biggest risk
Burst pipes in an unheated property cause enormous damage. Drain the water or maintain a minimum temperature ; that is a condition under virtually every policy.
If you do not, it counts as neglect and frost damage is not paid anywhere.
What else you can do
Have the property check periodically and record when that was done. If you use a live-in guardian or temporary occupants, report it, because it changes the risk and sometimes your cover.
