In brief

Home contents insurance treats watches as jewellery and applies a combined limit of indemnityto them. That limit is set out in your policy conditions and with most insurers is far below the value of a Rolex. On top of that, home contents cover applies in principle only inside the home and only for named causes. If you are wearing the watch, it is no longer insured once you step out of the front door.

For full cover you take out a valuables insurance, on which the watch appears as a named item with its own sum insured. That cover is usually comprehensive and applies in the home, away from the home and while travelling: theft and robbery, but also knocks, drops and water damage. You set the sum insured on the basis of a valuation report, and not on the basis of the original retail price.

With Rolex that last point matters more than with most makes. For sought-after references the market value is sometimes above the recommended price, and waiting lists make replacement with an identical example difficult. So insure at current value and keep the valuation up to date. Also watch the clauses about the safe, the alarm and leaving the watch in a car: they determine whether you are actually paid after a theft.

What does each policy cover?

The difference lies in the limit, in where the damage arises and in the way the value has been fixed.

The basics

Home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering)

Covers the watch only in the house and up to the jewellery limit.

  • The limit applies to all jewellery together
  • Only named perils, such as fire and burglary
  • No cover away from the home
  • No payout for loss
The extension

Valuables insurance

Insures the watch as a named item, away from home and while travelling as well.

  • Usually comprehensive, including drops and knocks
  • Cover for street robbery
  • Sum insured based on a valuation
  • The territory set out in the policy
The conditions

Clauses and evidence

Safekeeping, security and documentation determine how the claim is settled.

  • Safe clause outside the time worn
  • Requirements for an alarm or locks
  • Keep the serial number, papers and photographs
  • Reporting the theft to the police

Four points that determine the payment

What goes wrong with a claim lies almost always in the value, the clauses or the exclusions.

Insure at market value, not at till receipt

With much sought-after references the current market value differs from the original purchase price. If you insure on a receipt from years ago, the sum insured is too low and after a theft you cannot buy a comparable example back. A valuation report from a recognised valuer or an authorised dealer fixes the current value. A valuation that meets Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code binds the parties for an agreed period; after that the market value at the time of the loss applies again.

The jewellery limit is reached quickly

Home contents insurance adds watches, rings and necklaces together under one maximum per event. If the whole jewellery box disappears in a burglary, you receive that amount once, regardless of what was actually in it. A Rolex usually exceeds that limit on its own. Only what you name separately on a valuables policy falls outside the limit and is settled at its own sum insured.

What even comprehensive cover does not pay for

Usually not insured are scratches, wear and tear and discolouration from normal wear, damage arising during servicing, repair or polishing to a third party, and the the diminution in value that after a successful repair remains. Inherent defect, such as moisture getting in because the crown was not screwed down or a faulty movement, is a warranty matter and not an insured event. On some policies, disappearance without an identifiable cause excluded, and theft from a car is almost always excluded. Intent and recklessness are excluded through Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Take clauses and notifications seriously

With expensive watches insurers often set concrete requirements: keeping the watch in an anchored safe when you are not wearing it, a working alarm installation, or a restriction on taking it to certain countries. If you do not comply with a clause, the cover for that event lapses. If your situation changes, the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; a breach can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code) and always report it to the police, quoting the serial number.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value — the main basis for calculation
  • Number of watches — a single piece or a collection
  • Area of cover — the Netherlands, Europe or worldwide
  • Security of the home — a safe, an alarm, locks
  • How it is worn — worn daily or kept locked away
  • Excess and claims history — previous claims count

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is my Rolex included on my home contents insurance?

Only up to the jewellery limit and only within the home for named causes such as fire and burglary. That limit applies to all your jewellery and watches together and is usually exceeded by a single expensive watch. If you want the watch insured away from home and while travelling as well, valuables insurance is needed.

What is the sum insured based on?

On the current value, evidenced by a valuation report from a recognised valuer or an authorised dealer. With a recently bought watch the purchase invoice may be enough. With older or sought-after references the market value differs from the retail price, so an old receipt leads to underinsurance. Have the report renewed within the period set by the insurer.

Am I insured in a street robbery?

On a valuables policy usually yes, abroad as well, provided the territory allows it. Report it to the police at once and keep the police report; without one, insurers refuse theft claims. Watch for any clauses restricting wearing in certain areas, and for the almost universal exclusion for theft from a vehicle.

What if my watch is damaged during a service?

Damage arising during repair, servicing or polishing is almost always excluded on the valuables policy. During that period the risk lies with the party that has the watch in its care. So ask in advance how that party is insured and have the condition in which you hand the watch over recorded, including photographs and the serial number.

After a theft, do I get money or a replacement watch?

The insurer decides that within the conditions. Often replacement with an equivalent example is considered first; if that is not available, payment of the sum insured follows. No more than the actual value is paid: Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code forbids the insurance from leaving you in a clearly better position.
