Insuring a classic lorry

A classic lorry weighs tonnes, fits in no garage, and is repaired by a specialist who spends weeks on it; three things that appear nowhere on an ordinary classic vehicle policy.

In brief

You insure a classic lorry at an agreed value. With a classic car that valuation is mainly about originality and market demand; with a lorry it is about hours. Cab panels, an air pressure system, a reconditioned engine and the paintwork of a cab that no bodyshop has in its system. Have the valuer record not only the value, therefore, but also where repairs will be carried out and roughly what a day rate means there. Without that support, an insurer moves towards a total loss on a large claim sooner than you would like.

The policy assumes hobby use. If you drive to a rally, a truck show or a parade, that is covered. As soon as payment stands against a journey, the picture tips: an advertising run, a wedding, a house move for an acquaintance or moving goods for a business is business use. That goes with business lorry insurance , not an enthusiast policy.

Third-party liability cover is and remains compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), however few miles you cover. With a vehicle of this mass that is no formality: the damage a lorry does to others is of a different order from that of a car, and so is the recovery after an accident. Look as well at the hobby lorry in the wider sense, and at classic car insurance for the classic car.

The condition

Restoration

A lorry lying in pieces is a different risk.

  • At a restorer
  • Loose parts
  • Separate cover possible

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Where the lorry is kept determines almost the whole own-damage risk

A classic lorry does not fit in a garage. It stands in a shed, a rented unit on an industrial estate or under a canopy. With that the risk shifts from theft to fire, storm and collapsing roofs, and to whatever else goes on in the same shed: welding, timber storage, a battery charger left switched on. Insurers therefore set requirements for the storage and for how it is declared. If the lorry moves to a different shed, report it; a concealed change in the risk touches Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Repairs are carried out by a specialist, not by a bodyshop chain

Cab panels, chrome parts, an air brake system and mirror arms are often unobtainable for a classic lorry and have to be reproduced. That makes repair expensive and slow, and it makes the question whether you may have it repaired more important than the question how much is paid. Set out in advance that repair by a specialist of your choice is permitted and that the agreed value is built up on a repair basis . Otherwise your lorry is declared a technical total loss while it could perfectly well be saved.

One paid journey makes the use commercial

A classic lorry attracts attention, and that leads to requests: a run with a bridal couple, a company that wants the vehicle as a moving billboard, a house move for expenses. On an enthusiast policy carriage for payment is excluded, including on a one-off basis. If it is going to happen regularly, report it in advance; afterwards you end up with Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and with an insurer that does not have to pay anything. In that case look at the business lorry insurance.

At this weight, recovery is a cost item of its own

A classic lorry that comes to a stop at the roadside does not get away with an ordinary tow truck. A heavy recovery vehicle is needed, sometimes a crane and a low-loader, plus permission from the road authority. Check therefore how far the recovery and transport to the repairer extend and whether breakdown on the road is included. Beyond that, the following is excluded everywhere: taking part in pulling competitions and speed tests, and driving without the correct licence category for the permitted maximum mass.

A restoration is a different risk from driving

If the lorry lies in pieces or stands at a restorer, that is not a traffic risk but a storage and fire risk. Report it; some insurers have separate restoration cover, and at a restorer there is the further question of who is liable if something goes wrong there.

Tours are allowed, competitions are not

Club events, tours and shows generally fall within the cover. Speed events and use on a circuit are excluded everywhere. For regularity runs it differs by insurer; ask about it if you take part.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value including the body conversion — A tipper body, tank, tilt or lorry-mounted crane counts in the valuation and has to be named separately.
  • Permitted maximum mass and number of axles — Mass determines the damage you can do to others and with it the centre of gravity of the third-party liability premium.
  • Form of storage — A locked shed of your own, a shared rented unit or an outdoor yard lead to different fire and storm risks.
  • Pattern of use per year — The number of rallies and runs, and whether the lorry travels under its own power or on a low-loader.
  • Circle of drivers and entitlement to drive — Who may drive and which licence category they hold for this weight.
  • Recovery, assistance and excess — Heavy recovery is a separate module; the own-damage excess weighs heavily on this type of vehicle.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Which licence do I need for a classic lorry?

That depends on the permitted maximum mass shown on the registration certificate; above the limit for category B a heavier category is needed. The professional competence requirement with code 95 is tied to professional carriage and works differently for purely hobby driving. Have your situation checked: driving without the correct category is excluded on virtually every policy.

May I do paid work with my classic lorry?

Not on an enthusiast policy. Advertising runs, weddings, house moves and carrying goods for payment fall outside the cover, even for a single journey. If you want to use the lorry commercially, a business lorry policy goes with that, with cover written for that use and the carrier's liability that goes with it.

Is the lorry insured while it stands on a low-loader?

Usually not under your own policy. On a low-loader your lorry is someone else's load, and the liability of that carrier applies, with the limits that go with it. Have the transport covered separately or have it recorded that the carrier is insured for it. If the lorry drives to the event under its own power, your own cover simply continues.

Will my lorry be repaired after major damage or written off?

That depends on the relationship between the cost of repair and the agreed value. With a classic lorry repair costs run up quickly because parts are reproduced and there are few repairers. Set out in advance, therefore, that the valuation has been drawn up on a repair basis and that you may have the work done by a specialist of your choice.
