Insuring a business light quadricycle (brommobiel) by make
Care organisations, local authorities and delivery services use light quadricycles because they can get everywhere in a city. For the policy, what decides matters is not the make but the use and the question of who drives.

In brief
The make mainly determines the value, the supply of parts and the repair time after a loss. For the explanation by make, see light quadricycle insurance by make, covering among others Aixam, Ligier, Microcar, Citroën Ami and Opel Rocks-e. The cover itself depends on the use: see insuring a business light quadricycle.
The most important line on a business policy is the description of use. A light quadricycle for a home care worker driving from address to address is something other than a version with a load bed used for deliveries. Delivery and courier work is assessed separately by insurers and is excluded on a private policy. If it is stated incorrectly on the policy schedule, the loss falls outside the cover, even where it had nothing to do with the delivery work.
The second difference from a private policy is the driver. In business use several people often drive the same vehicle, sometimes young staff or agency workers holding only an AM licence. Include an unspecified range of drivers rather than a name, and record that you check the licence before anyone is given the key. Without a valid licence there is no cover and the insurer can recover the third-party losses paid to the victim.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Insuring a light quadricycle (brommobiel).
What to look out for
Four points that weigh more heavily in business use than the make or the version.
The load and the goods delivered are not included in the cover
The motor policy covers the vehicle and liability, not the goods you carry. Meals, parcels, medication or tools in the load space come under separate cover for carriage of your own goods or goods in transit. With perishable or temperature-sensitive loads, conditions of their own also apply; arrange that separately from the vehicle policy.
Staff in traffic
If an employee is injured while driving for work, Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code comes into play and, for taking part in traffic, the standard of good employment practice under Article 7:611 of the Dutch Civil Code. Ordinary public and employers' liability insurance (AVB) often does not cover that; there are separate products for it, see WEGAS and WEGAM. On a vehicle without the safety features of a car, this is not a theoretical point.
Livery, fitting-out and adaptations
Advertising lettering, a refrigeration unit, a luggage rack or an adapted load floor belong to the the insured value and must be declared. If you do not do so, a total loss is paid on the standard specification. Adaptations affecting the construction or the weight must also stay within the type approval, or the cover falls away.
Exclusions in business use
Outside the cover are: hiring out or lending to others, paid passenger transport, driving by someone who does not meet the licence requirement and any form of derestricting or removing the speed limiter. Business use that has not been reported comes under the Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code, and staff traffic fines are never insured.
What does your premium depend on?
- Purpose of use — carrying passengers, service journeys or delivery
- Number of vehicles — above a certain number of vehicles a combined policy is possible
- Circle of drivers — a named driver or changing staff
- Make, type and version — decisive for the value, the parts and the repair time
- Pitch — where the vehicles stand outside working hours
- Chosen additions — assistance, a replacement vehicle and occupants' cover
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| Your employee damages someone else's car while parking | Yes | Yes |
| Dents and scratches on the light quadricycle itself after that same manoeuvre | No | Yes |
| The light quadricycle is stolen from the street while your employee is inside with a client | No | Yes |
| The meals or parcels that were on their way to the customer at the time | No | No |
| A journey by an agency worker while one name is stated as the driver on the policy schedule | No | No |
| Injury to the employee who drove into a crash barrier during a work journey | No | Provided that |
What you carry and who drives stand apart from the level of cover: those two you record on the policy schedule.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Does the make affect the premium?
Indirectly, yes. The make and the version determine the list price and therefore the own-damage premium, and also how quickly parts are available after a loss. For the conditions of cover themselves it makes no difference: every light quadricycle falls into the same vehicle category and carries the same requirements as to licence, speed and use.
May a sixteen-year-old employee drive a business light quadricycle?
With a valid AM licence, yes. As an employer you then carry a duty of care: giving instruction, maintaining the vehicle and monitoring driving hours. Record that instruction in writing, because if the employee is injured you must be able to show under Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code that you took the necessary measures.
Can I put several light quadricycles on one policy?
Yes, above a certain number of vehicles a combined or fleet policy is possible, with one renewal date and one claims contact. The advantage is the overview when the fleet changes; the disadvantage is that the claims record of the whole group determines the rate. For small numbers, separate policies are often still more favourable.
What if an employee uses the vehicle privately?
Report that in advance, because private use of a business vehicle changes the risk and sometimes the range of drivers. Also record in writing who bears the excess for damage in private time; recovery from an employee is limited by law to intent or wilful recklessness, so that agreement has to be realistic.
