Motor trade insurance (garageverzekering) exists because a garage business spends all day driving vehicles that do not belong to it: customer cars, part-exchanges and trading stock, each with its own liability and own-damage question.

Motor trade insurance is a combined policy for the motor trade. First and foremost it arranges third-party liability for every vehicle you have in use: the cover that Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) makes compulsory as soon as a motor vehicle is used on the road. Test drives, collection and delivery services and driving on trade plates all fall under it.
It also includes care, custody and control cover : damage to customers' cars while they are in your workshop, on the ramp or on your premises. An ordinary public and employers' liability insurance specifically excludes such property; that is precisely why this product exists.
The third layer is your your own trading stock and the question of whether it is insured against fire, theft and hail while it stands outside. We match the care, custody and control limit to the value of the most expensive car that can be on your premises at any one time, and to how full your yard is at the weekend.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

What really matters.
What is covered
| What we look at | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Does the cover suit your activities | Yes |
| Sum insured and excess | Yes |
| Exclusions and clauses | Yes |
| Fit with your other policies | Yes |
| Premium in relation to the conditions | Yes |
| Comparing on premium alone | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
What goes wrong in the workshop goes wrong to a vehicle in your care: a car that rolls off the ramp, a door that swings into a pillar, a fire that spreads from a charging point. The care, custody and control limit is the maximum per event. If you work on young lease cars, electric models or prestige makes, a standard limit is quickly too low, particularly if several vehicles are on site at once.
Driving on trade plates is only permitted within the applicable rules and by people who are authorised to do so. If you let a customer take a test drive alone, check whether the policy allows this and what conditions apply as to driving licence, supervision and duration. If someone drives without valid authorisation, the injured third party remains protected under the WAM, but the insurer can recover the payment from you.
Used cars on the outdoor forecourt carry most of their risk at night and at weekends: theft, catalytic converter theft, vandalism, hail and storm damage. Own-damage cover for trading stock therefore almost always comes with prevention conditions on fencing, lighting, camera surveillance and where the keys are kept overnight. Keys in an unsecured cabinet in the showroom is a classic reason for a theft claim to be declined.
Not covered is the redoing of your own repair: if the clutch you fitted fails, you pay for the new clutch and the labour yourself, while consequential damage to the rest of the vehicle may well be covered. Also excluded are taking part in competitions and speed trials, misappropriation of a vehicle by a customer using false papers, and damage arising from tuning or chip tuning outside your described activities.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
For two reasons. The AVB excludes damage caused with or by a motor vehicle, and for a garage business that is the heart of the work. It also excludes damage to property in your care, while customers' cars are on your premises every day. Motor trade insurance settles exactly those two points in one policy, including the compulsory WAM cover.
For road accident damage during a journey you make, this runs through the liability section of the motor trade policy. For damage arising on your premises or in the workshop, the care, custody and control cover is decisive. Your customer's own comprehensive cover may respond, but it does not always pay out for damage caused by a third party during work, and it will then seek recovery from you.
The injured third party is protected in any event, because the WAM gives them a direct claim against the insurer. The next question is whether the journey fell within your policy conditions: authorised driver, valid driving licence, permitted duration and territory. If it did not, the insurer can recover the amount paid from you or from the driver. Record test drives in writing for that reason.
Only if storage is a described activity on your policy. Keeping vehicles outside a repair or sales context is assessed separately, because the risk then exists for a long period without any work being done. Additional requirements usually apply as to the fire safety of the space, the number of vehicles and how keys are stored. Notify this activity in advance; it cannot be read into the policy afterwards.
