In brief
The range is arranged by the situation you are in. Private covers your home, your possessions and your family: buildings, home contents, liability, car and legal expenses. Business covers your business: liability, buildings and contents, business interruption, staff and transport. There are also separate lines for the self-employed, and for VvE and for property that is let, because different policy types and different obligations apply there.
Anyone seeing everything set out at once is tempted to choose on premium. A more useful order is this: start with the losses you cannot carry yourself. Injury to another person has no upper limit, a house fire costs more than your savings, and long-term incapacity for work affects your income for years. Those three come first. Losses whose cost you could pay yourself if need be, such as a stolen bicycle or a cracked screen, can come afterwards, or not at all.
Bundling can pay off. For private clients there is the personal insurance package, for business owners the SME insurance package and for the self-employed a package built around liability as a self-employed professional (zzp'er). A package gives you one renewal date, one point of contact and usually a discount that rises with the number of sections. It is not a form of cover: what is not in it is not insured simply because the package looks comprehensive.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on SME insurance package.
What to look out for
Four things that apply to almost every policy in this overview, whatever the product.
Compulsory, required or voluntary
Some cover is required by law: for a motor vehicle, the compulsory insurance requirement of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)applies. Other cover is required by a third party: a lender requires buildings insurance, a client requires liability insurance, a deed of division requires buildings insurance for the VvE. The rest is your own judgement. Know which category each policy falls into.
Three exclusions that come back everywhere
Whatever the product, three things stay outside the cover. Damage you cause intentionally remains uninsured; Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code excludes it. War risks and nuclear reactions appear on every Dutch policy. And wear and tear, inherent defect and deferred maintenance are not a sudden event. Administrative fines and penalty payments are also uninsurable, because they are a punishment rather than compensation.
What you disclose determines what you get
The duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies to every application: you state what is relevant to the assessment, including an earlier refusal, a claims history or a criminal record. If that statement is inaccurate, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code . If your situation changes later, the same logic applies.
Being insured twice does not mean being paid twice
If a loss falls under two policies, for example home contents and travel insurance, it is paid once. Article 7:961 of the Dutch Civil Code governs that overlap and allows insurers to settle between themselves. Overlapping cover therefore costs premium without producing anything; that is the main reason to review your policies side by side periodically instead of renewing them separately.
What does your premium depend on?
- Type of cover chosen — limited or extended, and whether consequential loss is included
- Sum insured — too low leads to underinsurance, too high costs unnecessary premium
- Excess — a higher excess noticeably lowers the premium
- Claims history — the number and nature of earlier claims, assessed by product
- Prevention — locks, smoke alarms, security and maintenance arrangements
- How the package is put together — the number of sections on one contract affects the discount
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | Personal policies | Business policies |
|---|---|---|
| Your dog bites the delivery driver walking up the garden path | Yes | No |
| Fire spreads from the shed to your home | Yes | No |
| An employee drops scaffolding onto a parked car | No | Yes |
| Your rented premises burn out, including the contents you installed yourself | No | Yes |
| As a self-employed person you cannot work for a year after an accident | No | Provided that |
| Your bicycle is stolen at the station | Provided that | No |
If you work even a few hours a week on your own account, that loss belongs in the right-hand column.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Do I have to place everything with one insurer?
No. A package with one insurer gives you a clear overview and usually a discount, but the best conditions are rarely all with one provider. We compare several insurers objectively and, if you wish, place policies with different insurers while keeping the administration in one place. The trade-off differs by product: for straightforward cover the discount weighs more heavily, for complex risks the conditions do.
What is the difference between personal and business liability insurance?
The personal policy covers what you cause as a private individual and excludes everything you do in the exercise of a profession or business. So if you work as a self-employed person, including part-time alongside a job, that loss falls outside it and you need business cover. Both rest on the same legal basis, the wrongful act provision of Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Can I switch part-way through the term?
With most personal policies that is possible after the first contract year with a short notice period; business contracts more often have a fixed term with notice required before the contract renewal date. Never cancel before the new policy has been accepted, because there must not be a single day between two policies. We monitor that transition when you switch through our firm.
How do I know whether I am over- or underinsured for something?
By testing the sums insured against the actual values and the cover against your situation today. Refurbishments, a new car, staff or a second site change the risk without the policy moving with it. We go through these points with you periodically and, in doing so, also remove cover that no longer serves a purpose because of overlap or changed circumstances.
