Insuring a 700 cc quad bike

At 700 cc the question is not what a policy costs, but whether there is still an insurer that will accept it, and on what prevention conditions.

In brief

In the heaviest class the market is narrow. Insurers still willing to quote here generally do so subject to conditions set in advance: requirements as to storage, security and the experience of the rider.

Those conditions are not advice. If your policy states that the quad must be kept in a locked space or that an approved lock is compulsory, that is a guarantee; if it is not complied with, theft is not covered.

Note the category as well. A vehicle with a steering wheel, seat belts and a roll cage is not a quad but a different vehicle type, with its own classification and its own rate.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Here, storage and security are conditions of the policy

In this segment, prevention requirements are often set firmly in the conditions: a locked shed or barn, an approved lock, sometimes a ground anchor or a track-and-trace system. They are not recommendations but the conditions on which the cover was granted. If the quad is stolen while they have not been met, the insurer refuses the claim, even where the thief would have got in anyway. Have the situation recorded in writing in advance.

Your claims record determines whether a policy is available

Because few companies offer this segment, the question of acceptance weighs heavily. Earlier claims, a cancellation or a refusal by another insurer must be declared; that follows from the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you conceal it, the insurer can reduce or refuse payment after a loss under 7:930 DCC and cancel the policy, after which you will find no cover at all.

Check the territorial limits before you cross the border

Heavy quads go on holiday, often on a trailer. The cover does not automatically apply in every country: check which countries are on the green card and bear in mind that off-road riding abroad is just as excluded as it is here. Damage to the trailer carrying the quad also falls outside this policy, coming instead under that of the towing vehicle or under cover of its own.

A side-by-side is not a quad

Vehicles with a steering wheel, seat belts and a roll cage are classified differently from a quad with handlebars and a saddle. That difference determines the vehicle category on the registration document, the licence required and the rate. If you apply for a quad premium for such a vehicle, the policy is geared to the wrong risk. Give the category from the registration document and not the seller's description.

Limited acceptance at higher power outputs

Not every insurer accepts quad bikes in this class, certainly not with young riders.

Check the registration certificate, not the brochure

The vehicle classification on the registration certificate determines which driving licence you need and whether a helmet is compulsory — not the engine capacity in itself. A wrong assumption means driving without the proper entitlement, and cover then lapses, including for the damage you cause to someone else.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Power and acceptance policy — In the heaviest class only part of the market is still willing to quote.
  • Storage and level of security — A locked space, lock, ground anchor or tracking; often a condition of theft cover.
  • The driver's experience — The number of years holding a licence and earlier experience with heavy quads weigh heavily on acceptance.
  • Claims record and earlier cancellations — A refusal or cancellation by another insurer must be declared.
  • Area of cover — Which countries the cover has to include if the quad travels with you.
  • Type of cover and excess — At a high value, the excess on own-damage cover accounts for a noticeable part of the premium.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Why do so few insurers accept 700 cc?

Because the combination of high power, high repair costs and an attractive theft profile is carried by only part of the market. Those that do accept it do so subject to conditions set in advance: requirements as to storage and security and as to the experience of the regular rider. Comparing therefore pays off strongly in this segment.

What requirements does the insurer set for storage?

Often a locked shed or barn, an approved lock and sometimes a ground anchor or tracking. Those requirements are set out as conditions in the policy, not as advice. If you do not meet them at the time of a theft, the claim is refused. Have it recorded in writing in advance which arrangement the insurer has accepted.

Do I have to report an earlier refusal?

Yes. The duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code also covers earlier claims, a cancellation and a refusal by another company. If you conceal that, the insurer can reduce or refuse payment after a loss under Article 7:930 DCC and cancel the policy. After that you will find practically nothing left in this segment.

Am I covered abroad?

Only in the countries within the territorial limits; check the green card before you leave. Off-road riding is just as excluded across the border as it is here. If the quad travels on a trailer, damage to that trailer does not come under this policy but under that of the towing vehicle.
