Why home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering) falls short for valuables
Every contents policy carries maximums per category. Anyone who owns something valuable exceeds them sooner than they think.

The sub-limit
For jewellery, watches, audiovisual equipment and collections a maximum applies per category — often a few thousand euros for everything together.
That is not per item. Three rings, a necklace and a pair of earrings are often already above it without a single exceptional piece.
Away from home
Your home contents insurance covers damage in and around your home. If you wear a watch or a piece of jewellery outside the house, most policies do not cover it.
That is exactly where it goes wrong: watches break in the pub, jewellery disappears from a changing room, phones fall in the street.
Loss
Home contents insurance never covers loss , not even at home. Theft after forced entry is covered, but a ring that slips off a finger into the water is not.
With rings and watches, loss is in fact the most common claim.
What does work
A valuables insurance provides comprehensive worldwide cover, including dropping, loss and theft away from home.
That comes with a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, which fixes the value in advance so that no argument arises about it when a claim is made.

What is a sub-limit?
A maximum per category on your contents policy, often for everything together.
Does that apply per item?
No, for the whole category; add up all your jewellery.
Am I covered away from home?
With most contents policies, no.
Is loss covered?
Never on a contents policy; on a valuables policy usually yes.
What is the solution?
Valuables insurance, comprehensive and worldwide, with a valuation.
Where do I find my sub-limits?
On your policy schedule; they are there, but are rarely read.
What is covered and what is not
What is covered

| Your watch falls on the bathroom tiles and the case cracks | No | Yes |
| Your camera is stolen from your bag at a pavement cafe in Rome | No | Yes |
| Burglars take the whole jewellery box from the bedroom | Provided that | Yes |

A valuables policy does not pay for wear and tear either; the difference lies in dropping, losing and taking things out of the house.
