Why a business owner looks at car insurance differently
As soon as a car is used for work, more changes than the registration number. Staff behind the wheel, tools in the load space and downtime after a loss are risks that a private policy does not allow for.

In brief
The first step is the description of use. If you drive a car registered to the business, or you use your private car for work on a regular basis, that belongs on the policy schedule. It is not an obstacle, but it is a fact on which the premium and the acceptance are based. If it is not declared, the insurer can rely on the Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Where there are several vehicles, a fleet insurance becomes more practical than separate policies at a certain point.
The second step is staff behind the wheel. If you have an employee drive for work, you are liable as the employer for the loss he suffers in doing so, even where he made the mistake himself. The basis lies in the duty of care under Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code and in the requirement to act as a good employer. An ordinary business motor policy does not cover this; there are separate products for that, and the difference is explained on WEGAS and WEGAM. This also applies where the employee drives his own car.
The third step is the cargo. Tools, materials and equipment in the load space do not fall under the motor policy; that covers the vehicle, not what is inside it. Theft from a van is one of the most common losses among small and medium-sized businesses and calls for separate business contents or tools cover, often with requirements for locks and overnight parking. See also compare van insurance.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.
What to look out for
Four points on which a car used for business differs from a private car.
Damage to the goods carried is excluded
On a private policy as well as on a business motor policy, damage to the load is excluded. If tools break in a collision or are stolen from the van, that is not motor damage. Arrange separate cover for it and check the requirements for locks, alarms and where the vehicle is parked; with tools cover these are almost always a condition.
Road accidents do not fall under the AVB
Many business owners assume that the public and employers' liability insurance picks this up. It does not: loss suffered by an employee as a road user is usually excluded under the AVB. Without separate road risk cover, the claim from your employee, or from his surviving relatives, comes straight to you.
Downtime costs more than the repair
A van that stands at the repairer for two weeks costs turnover. A suitable replacement vehicle is not automatically included on business motor policies: check the period, whether it also applies after a theft and whether the replacement vehicle has the same load space, towbar or fitting-out. That is a policy section, not a service arrangement.
The standard exclusions also apply to business use
Carrying passengers for hire or reward without suitable cover, letting to third parties, driving without a valid licence or the required professional competence, and intent under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code are excluded. Fines and administrative penalties are never insurable, not even where they are imposed on the business.
What does your premium depend on?
- Number of vehicles — above a certain number it counts as a fleet
- Type of vehicle — car, van or special bodywork
- Circle of drivers — regular drivers or changing staff
- Annual mileage per vehicle — business mileage is usually higher
- Claims record of the fleet — with several vehicles the collective claims record counts
- Additional cover — road risk, business contents and legal expenses
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | Car insurance | Separate business cover |
|---|---|---|
| A ladder blows off the roof rack and damages an oncoming vehicle | Yes | No |
| An employee drives his own car to a customer and is injured in a single-vehicle accident | No | Yes |
| You lose turnover because the van stands at the repairer for three weeks after a collision | No | Provided that |
| A customer trips over the cable reel you had rolled out next to the van | No | Yes |
| You use the company car privately at the weekend and cause damage | Provided that | No |
| A nineteen-year-old trainee drives the company van into a loading dock | Provided that | No |
The motor policy covers the vehicle; everything inside it, towed behind it or working from it needs cover of its own.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Can I use my private car for business?
Yes, provided you declare the use. Occasional business journeys are not a problem with most insurers; regular use for work or the carriage of goods is a fact that belongs on the policy schedule. Failing to declare it can lead to a reduction in the payout after a loss under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code, even where the use had nothing to do with the cause.
Am I liable if my employee causes an accident?
For damage to third parties, the motor policy responds. For the employee's own loss the position is different: as the employer you bear that risk in principle, even where the employee made the mistake himself, unless there was intent or deliberate recklessness. Separate road risk cover picks that up; the AVB usually does not.
Are the tools in my van insured as well?
No. The motor policy covers the vehicle, not its contents. Tools and materials need separate cover, often with conditions on locks, alarms and where the van is parked overnight. If those are not met, cover for that event lapses. Keep an up-to-date inventory list with purchase receipts.
When does a fleet policy become worthwhile?
From a handful of vehicles onwards, depending on the insurer. The advantage lies not only in the premium but in the administration: one policy, one renewal date, and vehicles added or removed without a new application each time. The claims record is then assessed collectively, which works in your favour where the record is good and against you where it is not.
