The circumstances · not an admission of fault · both signatures

Why is the accident statement form so important?

The form records what happened at the moment both parties still agree. An hour later that is often different.

What it records

The the factual circumstances: positions, directions of travel, the sketch of the scene and which boxes have been ticked. That is the basis on which insurers assess the question of fault.

You sign for the circumstances, not for fault. That assessment is for the insurers.

Why it is indispensable

Without a form, two accounts stand opposed to each other later on. With a form signed by both parties, one version is recorded at the time itself.

The sketch of the scene is often decisive; draw it carefully and photograph the actual situation alongside it.

What not to do

Admitting liability. You can bind your insurer to something that later turns out not to be correct.

Signing without reading it. What it says is what counts later; check the ticked boxes before you sign.

Driving off without exchanging details. That is a criminal offence and it makes recovery virtually impossible.

If the other party will not cooperate

Note down the registration number, make and colour, photograph the vehicle and the scene, and look for witnesses. Where the other party is unidentified, a report to the police is needed to claim on the Waarborgfonds Motorverkeer.
