What the insurer does
In return for payment of premium it takes over the risk described in the policy. If an insured event occurs it pays out or conducts the defence.
What exactly is covered is set out in the policy conditions; you receive those before taking out cover and they are binding.
What you have to do
Give correct information when taking out cover. Article 7:928 DCC requires you to report everything that matters to the insurer; that duty continues when things change.
Pay the premium. If you fall into arrears, cover can be suspended.
Reporting a claim as soon as reasonably possible, under Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code.
Limit the loss where you can; Article 7:957 DCC makes that a duty, and those costs are reimbursed.
What happens if you get it wrong
If you withhold something when taking out cover or fail to report a change, the insurer can restrict or refuse payment — even for a loss unconnected with it.
That is why reporting is almost always wiser than taking the risk.
Cancelling
After the first contract year an insurance policy is cancellable daily with one month's notice, under Article 7:940 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Declared | Not declared |
|---|---|---|
| You let the house through a platform during holidays and a fire breaks out | Yes | No |
| You start a hairdressing salon at home and a customer trips over a cable | Yes | No |
| You have solar panels installed and the inverter catches fire | Yes | Provided that |
| You have moved to an address with a higher burglary risk and there is a break-in | Yes | Provided that |
| You skip the premium for two months and water damage occurs during that period | No | No |
| After a leak you have an emergency repair carried out straight away to prevent worse | Yes | Yes |
The right-hand column depends on what the insurer would have done with the correct details: a higher premium leads to a reduction, a refusal leads to nothing.
