Camper van insurance through Unigarant

A camper van is a vehicle with two faces: a motor vehicle that is driven and living space that stands still, and most damage arises in that second role.

In brief

A camper van falls under the insurance obligation in Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM): without third-party liability cover you may not take it on the road. That compulsory cover concerns only the damage you cause to others. Everything that makes a camper van a camper van – the body, the fixed fittings, the gas installation and the camping equipment – falls under own-damage cover or under a separate section, and not automatically under the third-party liability cover.

Things often go wrong when the value is established. Solar panels, a bicycle rack, an awning, an inverter or air conditioning fitted later belong to the camper van, but only count if they were declared when the insurance was taken out. Anyone who fails to do so discovers after roof damage that payment is based on the camper van as it was declared.

Unigarant offers a camper van product. We set out the structure of that cover, the storage conditions and the territorial limits alongside those of other providers and check whether it matches how you actually use the camper van. If a caravan is registered in your name as well, we look at that together with the caravan insurance.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is required by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorhome, not damage to your own motorhome.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare Unigarant's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Body and chassis are two different heads of loss

A collision hits the chassis, but the more expensive damage is usually in the body. Driving under too low a canopy, a branch that tears the roof open, or water drawn in through a seam or roof hatch: these are claims on the living unit. Damp damage that has arisen gradually, through aged sealant seams or deferred maintenance, is treated by insurers as wear and falls outside the cover. Repair of the first category is paid for; repair of the second is not.

Camping equipment and contents are not automatically covered by own-damage cover

Own-damage cover concerns the camper van itself. Your crockery, bedding, camping chairs, gas bottles, bicycles on the rack and electronics are loose items and only fall under the policy if a contents or baggage section is insured. Even then there are limits: valuables such as camera equipment, jewellery and laptops are usually in a separate, restricted category. Theft from an unlocked camper van or from a bicycle rack left unattended is as a rule excluded.

Storage determines a large part of the year

A camper van is on the road for a few months a year at most and stands still the rest of the time. Insurers attach conditions to that: a declared storage address, sometimes a locked site or shed. If the actual storage place differs from what the policy says, that can have consequences in the event of theft. Frost damage to the water system because the pipes were not drained before winter is a classic exclusion: that is treated as a failure to take proper care.

Abroad, weight and driving licence category

Most camper vans cover their miles outside the Netherlands. So check the territorial limits on the green card, because countries outside the standard list are not automatically insured. If your camper van weighs more than 3,500 kilograms, you need a category C1 licence. If you drive without the correct category, the compulsory third-party liability cover towards the victim still stands, but the insurer can reject the damage to your own camper van and recover the amount paid out from you.

Breakdown assistance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type and weight class — A van conversion, low-profile and A-class each have a different damage pattern and a different repair cost for damage to the body.
  • Value established including conversion work — Equipment fitted later only counts towards the premium and the payout if it has been declared.
  • Period of use and annual mileage — A camper van used only in the summer season has less exposure than one used all year round.
  • Storage address and security — Storage in a locked shed is weighed differently from a place on the public road or next to the house.
  • Area of cover — Journeys outside the standard area on the green card call for an extension and feed through into the premium.
  • No-claims years and excess — The no-claims years you have built up and the excess scale you choose together determine much of the final amount.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Are the contents of my camper van covered by the camper van insurance?

Not automatically. Own-damage cover concerns the camper van and the permanently built-in parts. Loose items such as crockery, bedding, camping furniture and electronics only fall under the policy if you insure a contents or baggage section. For valuables a separate, lower limit often applies. Theft from an unlocked camper van is as a rule not paid for.

Is my camper van insured during winter storage?

Yes, provided the storage address matches what is stated on the policy and you comply with the requirements set. Some insurers ask for a locked site or shed. Frost damage to water pipes or the boiler because the system was not drained falls outside the cover: that is seen as inadequate maintenance and not as a sudden event.

What happens if I hire out my motorhome?

Hire is a different risk from private use and is almost always excluded on an ordinary camper van policy. If you hire it out through a sharing platform or to acquaintances for payment without reporting this, the insurer can refuse to pay a claim because the use was incorrectly declared. If you want to hire it out, report that in advance so that we can look for suitable cover.

Do I need different insurance for a camper van heavier than 3,500 kilos?

The type of insurance stays the same, but acceptance and the entitlement to drive change. Above 3,500 kilograms you need a category C1 licence. Not every insurer accepts this weight class in its regular camper van product. If someone drives without the correct driving licence category, an own-damage claim can be rejected and a payment to a third party can be recovered from you.
