Insuring a light quadricycle (brommobiel) through Unigarant

If you use a light quadricycle (brommobiel) every day to stay independent, a policy without assistance is of little use. On an electric version the battery comes into it as well.

In brief

Finass arranges cover through Unigarant among others, a company with a broad range for leisure and recreational vehicles; the wider picture is on our page about Unigarant. We compare more than thirty companies objectively and the choice follows from your use, not from a preference set in advance.

A light quadricycle is often driven by someone for whom being stranded at the roadside is not a minor annoyance but a real problem. Breakdown assistance is therefore a module worth looking at seriously on this vehicle. Note three things: does the assistance also apply at your home or only from a certain distance, does it apply abroad as well, and is a replacement transport provided. The last of these is rarely a car in the moped category; do not assume it as a matter of course.

Do you drive a electric version, the battery comes into it; see also insuring an electric light quadricycle. Check whether the battery forms part of the insured value or whether it is hired or leased separately, because in the latter case the owner is a third party and their conditions apply. Also check whether damage while charging is included, and whether the charging cable falls under accessories or under a separate provision.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Insuring a light quadricycle (brommobiel).

What to look out for

Four subjects that make the difference where a light quadricycle is used every day.

Where assistance starts

Assistance is almost always a separate module and not part of third-party liability or own-damage cover. Some versions help only after an accident, others also with a breakdown, a flat battery or a puncture. If you already have a roadside assistance subscription, a second module gives you no extra rights; do check that the subscription includes the light quadricycle vehicle type.

Driving outside the Netherlands

The the territorial limits are stated on the certificate of insurance, generally the area of the green card. If you drive on to a country not listed there, separate frontier insurance is needed. Bear in mind, too, that the traffic rules for this vehicle category differ from country to country; what is allowed here is sometimes not permitted on the same roads elsewhere.

Battery, charging and the charging point

On an electric light quadricycle the battery is the most expensive component. Ask whether loss of capacity through normal use is excluded, because with almost every policy it is: that is wear and not a sudden event. Damage from charging with an unsuitable cable or a faulty installation likewise falls outside the cover, as does consequential damage to your consumer unit.

Use that breaks the cover

Excluded are delivery and courier work on a private policy, use as a driving-school vehicle, and driving by someone who does not meet the licence or age requirement. If you are going to use the light quadricycle for business, declare that in advance; undeclared use comes under the Articles 7:928 and 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and can cost you the payout.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Assistance module chosen — the Netherlands only or abroad as well
  • Fuel or electric — the value of the battery counts towards the own-damage premium
  • Number of vehicles on one policy — several vehicles can produce a package discount
  • Age of the driver — the rating group differs sharply by age category
  • Area of cover — different arrangements apply outside the green card area
  • Excess on own-damage cover — often arranged separately for glass damage

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is a flat battery a breakdown?

Not always. Some assistance modules exclude coming to a halt through lack of fuel or energy, because that is regarded as your own negligence; others do help and take you to the nearest charging point. On an electric light quadricycle this is the first question to put to the conditions, because the situation arises regularly in practice.

Can I keep my light quadricycle with the same company as my other vehicles?

Placing several vehicles with one company can bring a clear overview and a discount, but it only pays off if the conditions are right for each vehicle. A favourable car premium says nothing about the theft conditions for a light quadricycle. We work out both the separate policies and the package before you sign anything.

What is the difference with a mobility scooter or disability vehicle?

Those are different vehicle categories with their own rules on licences, top speed and where they belong on the road, and they are insured on a different policy. Check the registration details and the type approval to see which category applies to your vehicle; that entry determines which product you need, not the outward resemblance.

I only use the vehicle for a few months a year. Can the premium be reduced?

Seasonal policies are unusual for light quadricycles; even when standing still, the vehicle remains exposed to theft, fire and storm. You can influence the premium through the excess, the cover chosen and where the vehicle is kept. Storage in a locked space has the strongest effect on the own-damage premium over the winter.
