One: too low a sum insured

With underinsurance is paid proportionately. If your contents are insured for thirty thousand while they are worth sixty thousand, on a claim of ten thousand euros you receive half.

That applies to every loss, not only to a total loss. Update your sums insured periodically; that is the cheapest measure there is.

Two: failing to report changes

A business at home, letting through a platform, building work, solar panels. Article 7:928 DCC requires you to report these.

If you fail to disclose something and a loss occurs, the payout can be reduced — even for a loss that had nothing to do with it.

Three: choosing on premium instead of conditions

The cheapest policy is rarely the cheapest at claim time. Compare on excess, exclusions, sub-limits and the period of a replacement-value-as-new arrangement.

With motor insurance, a replacement-value-as-new period of three years rather than one year makes a difference of thousands of euros in the event of a total loss.

Four: cover that no longer fits

Comprehensive cover on a ten-year-old car, or still the contents sum from when you moved in together. Cover that was once right does not stay right by itself.

Five: gaps between policies

Care, custody and control, tenant's improvements, owner's interest and tools in the van. Those are the standard places where separate policies talk past each other and nobody covers the loss.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

What is the most expensive mistake?

Underinsurance; with it, every claim is paid proportionately.

What do I have to disclose?

Every change that matters: a business at home, letting, building work, solar panels.

What do I compare on?

On conditions and exclusions, not on premium alone.

When does comprehensive cover no longer fit?

When the market value falls below three to four times your annual premium plus the excess.

Where do the gaps fall?

With items in your charge, tenant's interest, owner's interest and tools on the road.

How do I prevent this?

Have your policies reviewed periodically; overlaps and gaps then become visible.

Most disappointments lie not in the major risks but in these small sections, which you have to switch on separately under each policy.
