In brief

The site is organised by audience and within that by product. Private visitors find subjects such as the liability insurance, the home contents insurance, the buildings insurance and the car insurance. Business visitors end up at the public and employers' liability insurance and the professional indemnity insurance. Owners' associations have an entry point of their own, including the VvE package.

Every product group has a hub page with the general story, and beneath it pages by occupation, sector, property or marque. If you are looking for the liability of a particular occupation, for example, you start at the hub and click through to that occupation's page. The differences between those pages lie in the exclusions and the clauses that often come into play in that line of work, not in the general product explanation. The same applies to property: a let home, a listed building and a property with commercial space are each assessed differently, even though the policy is called buildings insurance in all three cases.

There are also service pages that do not describe a product but an action: making an application, reporting a change, report a claim and the policy conditions looking something up. Who we are and on what terms we work is set out under about us and in the service guide.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).

How to find the right subject quickly

Four pointers for using this site, and one to remember above all.

Start with the event, not with the product

Most visitors look for a policy name while what they really have in mind is an event. Someone with a broken window is more likely to end up at glass within buildings insurance than at a separate policy. So first consider what is broken or who suffers the loss: that determines which insurance the claim belongs to, far more than the name you know. Your own belongings, the building itself and damage to others all lead to a different policy.

The audience determines the cover

The same event works out differently for a private individual, a business owner or an owners' association. A leak in a flat affects the communal building, the resident's owner's interest and the neighbours' contents at the same time. That is why the site is organised by audience first; choose that entry point before you look at the product.

The XML sitemap is for search engines

Alongside this overview page there is a machine-readable sitemap that helps search engines find all the pages and determine when they were last updated. It is not intended to be read by people. For you, this page, together with the menu and the breadcrumb at the top of every page, is the quickest route.

A page is not a policy

What you read here is general information and not an assurance of cover. What is insured in your case follows solely from your policy schedule, the clauses and the policy conditions. Virtually all such conditions exclude intent (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), war risks and nuclear reactions, and damage from earthquake and flooding. Wear and tear, deferred maintenance and construction defects also fall outside cover as standard.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Product chosen — every product has its own basis for the premium
  • Target group — personal, business or owners' association leads to a different form of policy
  • Sum insured — the maximum payout per event or per year
  • Type of cover — from limited to comprehensive, or from third-party liability to own-damage cover
  • Excess — a higher excess lowers the premium
  • Claims history — is taken into account in acceptance and in rating

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is every page of the site in this sitemap?

This page shows the main structure: audiences, product groups and service pages. The underlying pages by occupation, property or marque can be found via the hub page of the product concerned. Search engines are also given a full XML sitemap, which includes those deeper pages with the date they were last changed.

I do not know whether my question is personal or business.

What matters is the capacity in which you were acting when the loss arose. If you are doing DIY at home, that is personal. If you do the same work for a client, it is business and personal liability insurance provides no cover; it excludes damage connected with a profession or business. If you are unsure, put the situation to us.

Can I take out insurance directly through this site?

You can submit an application or a request for a quote. The insurance only comes into being after the insurer has accepted the risk and the policy schedule has been issued. Between application and acceptance there is therefore no cover yet. If something is urgent, report it by telephone so that we can see whether provisional cover is possible.

Why are there so many pages by occupation?

Because the exclusions differ by occupation. A roofer runs into the care, custody and control exclusion when working on someone else's building; an adviser runs into the line between property damage and pure financial loss. A general product page does not show that difference. The occupation page describes precisely which policy provision drives the discussion in that line of work.
