In brief

Finass Verzekert holds an AFM licence for non-life insurance. Investment services fall under a different licence category: we give no investment advice, do not manage assets and do not act as intermediaries in investment products. You arrange that directly with a bank or broker holding the right licence.

Investing means taking risk. Returns are not guaranteed and you can lose all or part of your stake. With leveraged or borrowing-based products the loss can even exceed your stake. Past performance says nothing about the future.

Who yourself invests, chooses execution only: the provider tests your knowledge and experience, but does not assess whether an investment suits your objective. You make that judgement yourself. Below are the points that weigh heaviest; this is general information and not advice.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points an independent investor has to assess for themselves.

Your stake is not guaranteed

Prices can fall and an issuer can become insolvent. Returns are not guaranteed and loss of your stake is possible. When investing with borrowed money or with a leveraged product the loss can also exceed your stake. Anyone investing money they need in the short term forces themselves to sell at the wrong moment.

Costs work through for years

Besides transaction costs and a service fee, within funds you normally pay an ongoing charges figure, which is not debited separately but is built into the price. Currency costs, dividend leakage and spreads count too. Compare providers on the total of the costs at your own trading frequency and stake, not on the most visible rate.

Investor protection does not cover falls in value

Investments are held separately from the institution's own assets, and there is a investor compensation scheme for the event that a licensed party fails to meet its obligations. That system protects against mismanagement or fraud at the institution, not against a falling price. Check whether the party appears in the AFM register and under whose supervision it falls.

Insurance does not cover your investments, but it does cover the risks around them

No insurance pays for an investment loss. What we do insure are the events that affect your assets in another way: damage to your home or contents, liability for injury or property damage to someone else (Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code), a legal dispute, and the loss of income through disability. Deliberate acts and recklessness remain excluded (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What to look out for when comparing

  • Licence — is the party listed in the AFM register
  • Total costs — transaction, service and ongoing costs
  • Spread — across regions, sectors and asset classes
  • Investment horizon — when do you need the money
  • Appetite for risk — what loss can you bear
  • Tax treatment — assets fall in box 3

This overview is general in nature and is not personal or investment advice.

How it works

  1. You choose a provider yourselfCheck that party in the AFM register.
  2. You set the horizon and the riskWhen do you need the money and what loss can you bear?
  3. You add up all the costsTransaction costs, service fee and the ongoing costs within funds.
  4. We cover the other risksHome, contents, liability, legal expenses and income.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does Finass Verzekert give investment advice?

No. Our AFM licence covers general insurance; investment services fall under a different category. We do not advise on investing, do not manage assets and do not act as intermediaries in investment products. For liability, home, home contents, valuables, motor, legal expenses and income protection you can come to us.

Can I lose my stake?

Yes. Returns are not guaranteed and prices can fall; an issuer can also become insolvent. With leveraged products or when investing with borrowed money the loss can exceed your stake. So do not invest money you need in the short term or that has to cover a fixed commitment.

What does execution only mean when investing?

That you decide yourself and the provider only carries out your orders. It tests your knowledge and experience and warns you if a product does not match them, but does not assess whether the investment fits your objective, horizon and financial situation. That assessment is your own responsibility; there is no adviser looking over your shoulder.

Does a guarantee scheme protect me against losses?

Not against falls in value. There is an investor compensation scheme for the event that a licensed institution fails to meet its obligations, for instance through fraud, and investments are held separately from the institution's own assets. If the value of your investments falls, that is your own risk and no scheme pays for it.

Assets built up, risks not yet covered?

We look at liability, your home, valuables and your income.
