Rhion is a general insurer that does not offer its products in the Netherlands directly, but solely through advisers and underwriting agents. You therefore always take out a policy through an intermediary, who also remains your point of Contact for changes and claims. The emphasis of the range lies with Engine vehicles: passenger cars and related vehicles. We deliberately quote no premiums, ratings or market figures here — what counts is whether the conditions suit your situation, and that differs with every application.
For you as a customer, going through an intermediary means two things. First, that the insurer's policy conditions and insurance card (verzekeringskaart) determine what is covered; what appears on a website is a summary. Second, that with an application we do not simply complete forms for one company but set the offering alongside that of other insurers. A policy with a lower premium but a narrower form of cover, a higher excess or a stricter age clause for drivers is not a better policy.
When you take out the policy, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code: you answer truthfully the questions about your claims history, use, drivers, home address and any criminal record. If you fail to disclose something the insurer should have known, payment can later be reduced or lapse under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. That applies with every company, so here too. What we and the insurer do and how we are paid is set out in our service guide.
The range for private individuals revolves around Engine vehicles; the structure follows the usual three forms of cover.
The legally required cover for damage you cause to others.
Adds events that you do not cause yourself.
Also covers damage to your own vehicle caused by you.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive cover |
|---|---|---|
| Damage and injury to the other party | Yes | Yes |
| Theft, fire and glass damage | No | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself to your own car | No | Yes |
| Injury to the driver where they are at fault | No | Provided that |
| Recovery of losses from an unwilling other party | Provided that | Provided that |
| Driving without a valid licence or under the influence | No | No |
This structure is the usual make-up of a Engine policy; what applies in your case is set out in the insurer's policy conditions and insurance card.
With an intermediary arrangement the insurer's conditions are decisive; we pay particular attention to the places where policies differ from one another.
Engine policies differ less in the main cover than in the clauses around it. Look at the depreciation scheme — how long replacement value as new or purchase value applies, and what comes after — at the level and number of excesses, at any young driver clause for drivers below a stated age, and at the step-back arrangement in the bonus-malus scale after a claim. Accessories, audio equipment, a towbar and charging cables also have different limits at each company. These points make the difference at claim time, while remaining invisible in a premium comparison.
At every company, so here too, the same situations remain excluded: driving without a valid driving licence or while disqualified from driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or refusing the test, and taking part in speed or skill competitions and track use. Letting, driving lessons and paid passenger transport are excluded as long as they have not been declared. Exclusions also apply to intent and recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, for damage caused by wear, construction faults and deferred maintenance, and for fines and criminal sanctions, which are never insurable. You report a claim as soon as reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
No. In the Netherlands this company works through advisers and underwriting agents. You therefore take out the insurance through an intermediary, who also remains your point of Contact for changes, cancellation and claims. In practice that means you have one point of Contact instead of a customer service desk per policy, and that the application always goes through an adviser.
Because a premium only arises after a calculation on your details: no-claims years, vehicle, postcode, drivers and the cover chosen. Quoting an amount without those details tells you nothing. We also leave out ratings and market figures; what counts at claim time are the policy conditions and the clauses, not a score on a comparison site.
By setting the premium and conditions alongside those of other companies. We look at the depreciation and replacement-value-as-new arrangement, the excess, any age clauses for drivers and the step-back in the bonus-malus scale after a claim. With an older car, different things weigh heavily than with a new one; the outcome therefore differs from case to case.
You report the claim to us, as soon as reasonably possible; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires this. We pass the notification on to the company and follow the handling. Record the situation yourself in advance with photographs and a completed European accident statement, and in the event of theft, vandalism or a hit-and-run always report it to the police.
Request a quote without obligation; we set the offering alongside that of other insurers.
