In brief

Finass Verzekert holds an AFM licence for non-life insurance (12016589). Health insurance falls outside our field: we do not advise on it and do not act as an intermediary for it. What follows is an explanation of the system, not advice about a policy or an insurer.

The basic health insurance is compulsory under the Health Insurance Act for anyone who lives in the Netherlands or pays wage tax here. The content of the basic package is set nationally and is the same at every insurer. For the basic insurance there is duty to accept: an insurer may not refuse you and may not select on health grounds.

So the differences lie not in the package, but in the policy form, the healthcare providers under contract, the premium and the service. For supplementary insurance there is no obligation to accept; there you can be asked about your health.

Who does what around your health insurance?

The division of roles in three cards, with below each task the person who carries it out.

What your health insurance reimburses exactly is set out in the policy conditions, the regulations and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of your health insurer.

What to look at when assessing

Four points that make more difference than the monthly premium.

The type of policy determines your freedom of choice

With an in-kind policy the insurer contracts healthcare providers; if you go to a provider without a contract, you are often reimbursed only in part. A reimbursement policy gives more freedom and is usually more expensive. Look up your own hospital, physiotherapist or mental health provider in the provider search tool before you choose.

The basic package is the same everywhere

The content of the basic insurance is set by law and does not differ from one insurer to another. Comparing on package content is therefore pointless; comparing on contracted providers, service and premium is not. Changes to the package are decided nationally and are set out in the Zorgverzekeringswet (the Dutch Health Insurance Act) and the associated regulations.

There is no obligation to accept for supplementary insurance

For supplementary cover an insurer may refuse you, impose a waiting period or ask health questions. Also watch out for maximum reimbursements per year and for a requirement that you take the basic and supplementary cover from the same insurer. So do not cancel a supplementary policy before the new one is in place.

You can switch at the turn of the year

Health insurance runs per calendar year. You cancel before the end of the year and take out new basic insurance within the statutory period after that; the cover then starts retrospectively on 1 January. Outside that moment you can only switch in special circumstances.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Type of policy — in-kind, reimbursement or a combination of the two
  • Contracted care providers — is your hospital or practitioner listed
  • Voluntary excess — a lower premium, but higher costs if you use care
  • Additional packages — watch out for maximum reimbursements and waiting periods
  • Acceptance conditions — health questions only arise on the supplementary part
  • Notice and switching periods — the turn of the year is the regular moment

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice about your health insurance.

How it works

  1. You get out your policy documentsThe policy schedule, the conditions and the overview of changes.
  2. You check your healthcare providersAre they still in your insurer's provider search tool.
  3. You assess the supplementary packageOn maximum reimbursements, waiting periods and health questions.
  4. You arrange a switch in good timeAround the turn of the year, and never cancel before the new policy is in place.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does Finass Verzekert arrange health insurance?

No. Our licence covers general insurance. We do not advise on health policies, do not arrange switches and make no statements about reimbursements. For that you go to your health insurer or an adviser with the appropriate licence. For liability, travel, legal expenses and disability cover you can come to us.

Can a health insurer refuse me?

Not for the basic insurance: there is an obligation to accept and selection on health grounds is not permitted. That obligation does not apply to supplementary insurance. There an insurer may ask health questions, include a restriction or refuse you.

Where do I check whether something is reimbursed?

In the policy conditions and the schedule of reimbursements of your own insurer, together with the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) and the provider search tool listing the contracted providers. What is in the basic package nationally follows from the Health Insurance Act and the regulations based on it; that is the same at every insurer.

How do I check the changes for a new year?

Your insurer sends an overview each year of the changes to the premium, conditions and contracted providers. Put that next to your current policy schedule and pay particular attention to providers that are no longer under contract. Do not accept changes on the basis of reports from third parties; check them in your own policy documents.

Why does this page not mention any amounts?

Premiums, the compulsory excess and the content of the package are adjusted periodically and differ from one insurer to another. We do not act as an intermediary for health insurance and would be quoting figures that quickly become out of date. For current amounts, consult your health insurer and the official government information.

Questions about your other insurances?

We do not advise on health cover, but we are happy to go through liability, legal expenses, travel and disability cover with you.
