Everyday accidents · large amounts · legal assistance included
What is the purpose of liability insurance?
Not for the small things. For the one case in which an everyday accident produces an amount you cannot carry.

The everyday cases
A child who breaks a window playing football. A dog that lunges at a cyclist. A knocked-over glass on a laptop at a friend's house. A cyclist you hit while opening a door.
Each of them a situation in which nobody did anything serious, and in which you are liable all the same.
What it is really about
Injury. As soon as someone is injured, the scale changes. Loss of earning capacity, care costs, adaptations to a home and compensation for pain and suffering are calculated over the rest of the victim's life.
Where a thirty-year-old is permanently unfit for work, that runs into millions. That is the amount the policy exists for.
What is usually included
Defence against unjustified claims. If you are held liable when you did nothing wrong, your insurer conducts that defence and pays the cost of it.
That is an element people rarely mention but which in practice is often the first thing you need.
What it is not for
Damage to your own belongings — that is home contents. Damage caused with a motor vehicle — that is third-party motor insurance. Damage in a profession or business — that is an AVB.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
What is the purpose of liability insurance?
For damage you cause to others, with injury claims as the risk that really matters.
What if someone holds me liable without justification?
Then your insurer conducts the defence and pays the cost of it.
Why are injury claims so high?
Because the loss is calculated over the victim's whole life.
Is damage to my own belongings covered?
No; your home contents insurance is for that.
What about damage with the car?
That falls under the third-party insurance on the vehicle.
And damage during my work?
That falls under your employer's public and employers' liability insurance or your own AVB.
