Hobby use · category C licence · limited mileage
A lorry registered to a private individual is something different from a truck in a fleet. No load, no drivers, low mileage — and that should be reflected in the premium.

If you drive a lorry as a hobby — to shows, truck meetings or as a camping vehicle — a business lorry policy is not appropriate. That is based on annual mileages, drivers and load risks that do not apply to you.
Insurers that accept private lorry ownership work with limited mileage, often five thousand to ten thousand kilometres a year, and with the condition that you have another car for everyday use. In return the premium is considerably lower.
You need category C driving licence , and with a trailer above the limit, CE as well. For non-commercial use no code 95 and no tachograph requirement applies, but vehicle requirements such as the roadworthiness test continue to apply in full.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others with the lorry.
Theft, fire, storm and windscreen damage to the truck itself.
Your own fault too, and payment on a valued amount.
What is covered

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
The low premium rests on the assumption that you drive little and do not carry goods commercially. If you do paid work with the truck, even occasionally, the use departs from what you declared and the insurer can reduce or refuse payment when you claim. It is better to report it in advance; there are policies that allow occasional business use.
A truck stands idle for most of the year, and that is when fire, storm and theft damage happens. Where the vehicle spends the winter determines acceptance and the premium more strongly than how far you drive it. Report a change of storage location; the theft cover is tied to the location declared.
A living unit, kitchen, lighting, chrome work or a modified interior is not included in the list price. On show trucks that easily runs into tens of thousands of euros. Declare it separately with its value; without a declaration only the bare truck is covered in the event of a total loss.
If you only drive in season, you can suspend the registration at the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority): no road tax and no third-party liability requirement. The risk of fire and theft in storage remains, and you cover that with storage cover. Without that cover the truck stands uninsured all winter.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

The questions we are asked most often about this.
Yes, with insurers that accept hobby use. They work with a limited annual mileage and usually require you to have another car for everyday use.
A category C licence, and CE with a heavy trailer. For non-commercial use no code 95 and no tachograph requirement applies; the roadworthiness test requirement does still apply.
Only if you declare it. Commercial carriage differs from hobby use and, if not reported, is a ground for refusing payment.
Only if you declare it with its value. A living unit, kitchen, lighting and chrome work are not included in the list price.
Yes, at the RDW. The third-party liability requirement and road tax then lapse; you cover fire and theft in storage with storage cover.
A business policy is based on annual mileage, drivers and load risk. With hobby use those do not apply, and that makes a considerable difference to the premium.
