Always
Your policy number, a description of what happened with the date and time, and photos of the damage.
For theft, burglary, vandalism and a collision with an unknown party: a a police report to the police. Without a police report a claim is almost never paid.
For vehicle damage
The European Accident Statement, witness statements and a repair estimate or invoice. In the event of a total loss, also the registration document and the keys.
For damage to the home
Purchase receipts or bank statements for the damaged items, photographs of the situation before clearing up, and, in the case of a leak, the leak detection report.
For valuables, the valuation report; without a valuation you will be arguing about the value afterwards.
What you can do now
Make a photographic record of your home and contents, room by room, and keep it away from the house or in the cloud.
Record the serial numbers of valuable equipment and keep receipts for major purchases. In the event of fire or theft, that is the difference between proving and estimating.
