In brief

Finass is an insurance adviser and intermediary, not an insurer. We take stock of your risk, set the offerings of more than thirty companies side by side and bring about the contract between you and the insurer that follows from it. The risk is borne by that insurer, not by us. That distinction is decisive: an assurance from our office is only cover once the insurer has accepted the risk and it appears on the policy schedule. Who we are, under which licence we work and how we are paid is set out in our service guide.

Cooperation can take various forms. An ongoing advisory relationship means that we administer your whole portfolio, process changes and guide the handling of claims. With a referral by an estate agent, accountant or owners' association manager, that party remains your own adviser for their field and we take on the insurance side only. With a transfer of a portfolio from another firm, your policy simply continues; only the advising firm changes, and that is confirmed to you in writing in advance.

What we do not do is just as much part of it. We give no tax, legal or structural advice, and we do not act as a claims handler on the insurer's behalf. If you want to arrange something, use the application form, notifying a change or report a claim. For an overview of our activities, see services.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).

How the cooperation works in practice

Four commitments that determine what you may expect from us and what we need from you.

We compare, the insurer accepts

Our role ends with the proposal; acceptance lies with the company. An insurer may refuse a risk, accept it on a limited basis or impose a clause, for example after a claims history or where a property is used in an unusual way. As long as there is no policy schedule, there is no cover. An assessment given by us verbally or by email is therefore not an assurance of cover.

What we need from you

Advice is only as good as the information it rests on. On application, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies: all questions answered fully and truthfully, including insurance previously refused or cancelled and any criminal record within the period asked about. If it turns out afterwards that something was withheld, the insurer can, under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code reduce or refuse the payout.

Remuneration and independence

We are paid through commission included in the premium or through a fixed fee, depending on the product. We are not tied to any particular insurer and hold no shareholding in a company. Which form applies in your case, and what amount or percentage goes with it, is set out in our services guide and is discussed with you in advance.

Ending the partnership

You can transfer the administration to another firm at any time; your policy then continues unchanged with the same insurer. Conversely, we can hand back an instruction, for example where we cannot place the risk responsibly. In both cases we hand over the file and confirm the end date of our administration in writing, so that no period arises in which nobody is the point of contact.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number and type of policies — a package is assessed differently from separate policies
  • Risk profile — address, occupation, use and household composition
  • Claims history — earlier claims count towards acceptance and premium
  • Type of cover chosen — from limited to comprehensive, the premium differs considerably
  • Excess — a higher excess brings the premium down
  • Payment term — paying annually is usually cheaper than paying monthly

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does an advice meeting cost money?

For most personal general insurance our remuneration is included in the premium and you pay nothing separately. For more complex commercial files or standalone advice, a fixed fee may apply. What applies in your situation we agree and record in advance, so that you know where you stand before any work is done.

I already have an adviser. Can I still place one policy with you?

You can, but there is a drawback. As soon as your portfolio is split between two firms, nobody sees the whole picture and gaps between policies more easily go unnoticed. Think of the fit between buildings and home contents insurance, or between personal and business liability cover. We indicate in advance where overlap or a gap could arise in your case.

What happens to my policy if I change adviser?

Nothing to the insurance itself. The contract remains between you and the insurer, with the same conditions, the same premium and the same start date. Only the intermediary named on the policy changes. You receive confirmation of this from the insurer. Do make sure, though, that any current claim files are clearly handed over to the new firm.

Do you also refer people to other parties?

Yes, where a question falls outside our field. Tax consequences, employment disputes, valuations and structural surveys we leave to specialists. We give no opinion on those and are not liable for the work of those parties either. We do use their outcome, such as a valuation report, in order to establish the insured value correctly.
