OOM Verzekeringen · compared independently · advice from Finass
Outside the Dutch system there is no obligation to accept: an international medical insurance first assesses your health and then determines what is excluded for you.

This product resembles health insurance but works under different rules. Dutch basic health insurance has a statutorily defined package, an obligation to accept and a premium that is the same for everyone. An international medical insurance is an ordinary private indemnity insurance: the insurer may refuse you, may exclude a condition and may apply a different rate to each person.
That is why it starts here with medical acceptance. You complete a health declaration and, under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code it must be complete. What you declare can lead to a clause permanently excluding a condition; what you fail to declare can be raised against you by the insurer under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code at the moment you need the cover most.
The second thing that determines everything is the area of cover. Worldwide cover with and without the United States and Canada are two different products, with different networks and different arrangements for direct payment to the hospital. We settle those choices first and then compare OOM's conditions with those of other providers.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
The basic cover insures the core of your medical insurance; we show what OOM and other insurers offer within it.
In addition to damage to third parties, employers' and product liability and damage during work at the client's premises.
The most complete cover. We compare OOM's extended version with the market.

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
An insurer can refuse you, apply an increased rate or exclude a condition. That exclusion appears as a clause on your policy schedule and often applies to complications and consequences of the same condition as well. So always ask for the wording of the clause before you sign, because a broadly worded exclusion can later cover far more than the complaint you once saw your GP about.
For childbirth, dental care, physiotherapy and psychological help, waiting periods generally apply from the start date. What is decisive is not when you came forward but when the condition arose or the first symptoms appeared. An ailment that began shortly before the start date and is only diagnosed afterwards is treated as pre-existing. That distinction is the most common reason for a claim being refused.
For hospital admissions, operations, diagnostic imaging and treatment outside the network you must obtain prior authorisation from the insurer or the emergency assistance centre. Without that authorisation, often only part is reimbursed or you have to pay the bill up front yourself. Report an event as soon as reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires; reporting late costs you cover if the insurer is prejudiced as a result.
Cosmetic procedures without medical necessity, fertility treatment, addiction care, experimental or not yet recognised treatment and care you deliberately seek in another country because it is cheaper there are excluded as standard. Treatment outside the agreed area of cover also falls outside, which particularly affects holidays in the United States under a policy that excludes that area.
Retroactive cover (prior risk) Included for your staff during work.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Yes. The obligation to accept under the Health Insurance Act applies only to Dutch basic health insurance. An international medical insurance is a private indemnity insurance; the insurer may reject an application, charge a loading or permanently exclude a condition. It is therefore worth having the application assessed by several providers before you sign anywhere definitively.
Only if you are no longer liable to insure. As long as you are a resident or pay payroll tax here, you must have basic health insurance and may not replace it with an international policy. If the obligation lapses because you deregister, the international cover takes over and you must cancel the basic health insurance as at exactly the same date.
Because medical costs there are at a completely different level from elsewhere and the insurer can barely make rate agreements. Policies with and without cover in the United States and Canada are therefore separate products. If you travel there occasionally, ask whether a temporary extension is possible instead of full worldwide cover.
Call the emergency assistance centre first, including in an emergency and outside office hours. They arrange a guarantee of payment, so that the hospital invoices the insurer directly and you do not have to pay anything up front. Without that step you receive the bill yourself and run the risk that part of it is not reimbursed because there was no prior authorisation.
Request a quote without obligation. We will look at which insurer best matches your activities and your risk.
