In brief

The driving half of a camper van falls under the ordinary rules for motor vehicles: third-party liability is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM), and above that you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive cover. The living half follows a different logic. Fixed fitting-out such as the kitchen, the toilet, the awning and the bicycle rack belongs to the vehicle; loose items you take with you fall under separate contents or baggage cover.

That distinction is what most disputes are about. A fridge that has been emptied and then breaks down is not the same as a stolen suitcase, and a leaking roof seam is different again from a collision. For journeys abroad there is also the question of how far the assistance extends: recovery of the vehicle only, or replacement accommodation and repatriation of the occupants as well.

We assess the camper van variant from NH1816 on its value arrangement, cover abroad and the treatment of damp and fitting-out damage, and set that alongside other providers such as Ansvar Idéa and Unigarant.

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

Third-party liability insurance is required by law and covers damage you cause to others with your motorhome, not damage to your own motorhome.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, protection against damage to your own car from external causes you cannot prevent.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself, theft and total loss. We compare NH1816's comprehensive version with the market.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Damp and leaks are not an accident

The classic camper van claim is not a collision but water slowly getting in through a roof hatch, a seam or a window seal. Damp entering gradually and its consequences, such as rot in the sandwich panel, are excluded as standard. Only sudden damage is covered. An annual damp reading at the dealer is therefore not a formality: without that report you are in a weak position if the insurer argues that the problem had been developing for some time.

Fitting-out and contents are two parts of the policy

What is fixed in the camper van counts towards the insured value of the vehicle; what you put in it does not. Crockery, clothing, bicycles and electronics fall under separate contents cover with its own limit and often its own forced-entry requirement. Bicycles on a rack outside the camper van almost always have a stricter arrangement than items inside it. So check whether the solar panels or inverter you fitted later have been declared.

Hire and permanent occupation fall outside the cover

A private camper van policy assumes your own recreational use. If you hire the camper van out to third parties, including through a sharing platform, there is no cover during that period unless it has been arranged in advance. The same applies if the camper van is permanently occupied or serves as a fixed home. Anyone hiring it out in the low season to reduce costs therefore has to report that before the first hirer drives away.

Winter storage and frost damage

Water left in the pipes or the boiler that freezes causes damage that is almost always excluded if the system has not been drained. Insurers attach an express condition to this. If the camper van is in storage during the winter, also check that the storage condition in the policy matches the place where it actually stands; a different address can lead to discussion in the event of theft.

Breakdown assistance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type and weight — A van conversion, a low-profile and an A-class differ in weight, repair costs and the driving licence category required.
  • Value and value arrangement — Market value, purchase price or an agreed value. With a self-build or an expensive fitting-out, a valuation is often the only workable route.
  • Number of kilometres per year — Camper vans stand still for much of the year. A low mileage counts towards the exposure to traffic damage.
  • Area of travel — Driving within Europe or beyond it determines the scope of the assistance cover and of the green card cover.
  • Storage location out of season — A locked storage place is weighed differently from a camper van that stands on the public road all year round.
  • Contents covered as well — The limit chosen for baggage, bicycles and electronics comes on top of the premium for the vehicle itself.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Are my bicycles on the rear rack insured as well?

Not automatically. Bicycles outside the camper van fall under the contents or baggage cover and usually have a separate limit there, plus the requirement that they are secured to the rack with an approved lock. In the event of theft the insurer will ask for the purchase receipt and the frame number. Expensive electric bicycles are often better insured separately than under the camper van policy.

What happens if the camper van breaks down abroad?

That is dealt with by the assistance cover, not by own-damage cover. It determines whether only the vehicle is recovered or the occupants are also given accommodation and brought home. Because you live in a camper van, replacement accommodation is a real consideration; replacement transport in the form of an ordinary hire car usually does not solve your problem. This is exactly the part we compare closely.

I built the camper van myself. Can it be insured?

Yes, but a valuation report is then practically indispensable. With a self-build there is no list price for the insurer to fall back on, and without a recorded value you are left with an estimate in the event of a total loss. A valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code fixes the value in advance. Also keep the invoices for the fitting-out materials and the RDW inspection certificate.

Does damage to the awning count as damage to the vehicle?

An awning is permanently attached to the camper van and therefore belongs to the vehicle. Storm or wind damage to it is in principle an own-damage claim. The practical restriction lies elsewhere: many sets of conditions exclude damage if the awning was left out in wind above a certain strength or was left extended unattended. That is a condition about behaviour, not a question of cover.
