Insurance through Nationale-Nederlanden
Nationale-Nederlanden is one of the insurers we act as an intermediary for. What counts on this page is not the name but the acceptance: which questions you answer and what happens if an answer turns out to be wrong.
- Several insurers compared objectively

In brief
Finass Verzekert acts as an intermediary for insurance from Nationale-Nederlanden. We are an independent office: we compare the offerings of more than thirty insurers objectively, and which party it becomes follows from the cover you need. A large part of our work takes place before the policy, in the acceptance. That is where it is decided whether you get cover, on what conditions, and with which clauses on the clause schedule.
The basis for that is the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code: you declare everything you know or ought to know that may be relevant to the acceptance. That goes beyond the premium. An earlier insurance that was refused or cancelled, a series of claims in recent years, a criminal record within the period asked about — those are precisely the points they want to know about. Concealing does not pay: Article 7:930 DCC removes the right to payment where the insurer would not have accepted the risk had the information been correct, and Article 7:929 DCC gives it the right to cancel the policy.
What is insured after that is set out on the policy schedule and the clause schedule. For the products in this group that starts with trailer insurance; if you drive for business, the business versionapplies, and for the towing vehicle the car insurance or the van insurance.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare trailer insurance.
What to look out for
Four points in the process between application and policy that later determine whether you are paid.
The final question is not a formality
At the bottom of almost every application form there is a question about a criminal record and about an earlier refusal, cancellation or termination. An incorrect answer to that is the most common reason for a claim being refused in full , even where the fact concealed has nothing to do with the loss. If you are unsure whether something is worth reporting, report it and let the insurer assess it.
Fraud and registration
With a deliberately misleading statement or an inflated claim, it is not only the right to payment that lapses. Insurers can record the details in the warning system to which the whole sector is affiliated. That makes taking out new insurance elsewhere difficult for years. Article 7:952 DCC also excludes damage caused by intent out.
Reporting changes during the term
Moving house, a different place where a vehicle is kept, a refurbishment, business use of a private object or letting: all of these are changes that alter the risk. Report them in writing as soon as they arise. The insurer can adjust the conditions; if you do nothing, you run the risk that the policy no longer matches your situation at the moment you need it.
Provisional cover and the moment cover starts
There is cover only from the moment the insurer has accepted the risk, or from an expressly given provisional cover. Damage that had already arisen or was already known about before that date is not insured. So do not wait until the handover of the keys or the first journey before applying.
What does your premium depend on?
- Claims history — the number and nature of claims in recent years
- Earlier cancellation or termination — weighs heavily in the acceptance
- Item and insured value — the direct basis for the premium
- Use and user — private, business, fixed or changing drivers
- Security and prevention — locks, alarm and where the vehicle is kept, recorded in clauses
- Excess — the simplest lever for steering the premium
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | The car's third-party liability cover | Trailer insurance |
|---|---|---|
| The trailer hits the car parked next to you while you are reversing | Yes | No |
| Your enclosed luggage trailer is taken from the drive overnight | No | Yes |
| Hail dents the roof of the trailer while it is in winter storage | No | Provided that |
| A plank blows off the trailer and damages the car behind you | Yes | No |
| The belongings that were in the stolen trailer | No | No |
| You drive into a post yourself and the drawbar is bent | No | Provided that |
As long as the trailer is coupled behind the car, liability runs with the towing vehicle; damage to the trailer itself never does.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Do you work only with this insurer?
No. We act as an intermediary for the offerings of more than thirty insurers and compare them objectively. Nationale-Nederlanden is one of them. Which party it becomes depends on your situation: the object, the use, your insurance history and the conditions you need. We give reasons for that choice and show where the conditions differ from one another.
My cover was once terminated. Can I still be insured?
Usually yes, but not everywhere and not always on standard conditions. What matters is that you report it. If you do not and it comes to light when you claim, the insurer can refuse the payment under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and cancel the policy. With full disclosure we look for an insurer that will Accept your situation.
How far back do I have to report something?
The application states the period over which you are asked about criminal matters and claims history. Outside that period you need report nothing, within it you do, even if you think it unimportant. The insurer decides whether it is relevant, not you. If in doubt, report it and have it confirmed in writing; that is the safe route.
From when am I insured?
From the start date on the policy schedule, or from the provisional cover if that has been given in writing. A verbal assurance is hard to prove in a dispute. If damage arises in the period between application and acceptance, report it straight away; Article 7:941 DCC requires you to report as soon as you are reasonably aware of the loss in any event.
