What does third-party liability insurance cost per month?
Third-party is the cheapest form because it covers the least: only damage to other people.

What you get for it
Damage that you cause with your car to others to other people. Your own car is not covered: if you drive into a post, you pay for that yourself.
This is the minimum cover required by law under the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM).
What determines the premium
The same factors as with the other forms: your age and no-claims years, your mileage, the rating group of the car and where you live.
With third-party cover the car weighs less heavily than with own-damage cover, because the value of your own car is not insured.
When third-party cover is enough
For a car with a low market value that you could replace without difficulty. If the car were gone tomorrow and that would not put you in financial trouble, own-damage cover is hard to justify.
Note that with finance the lender usually requires comprehensive cover for as long as the loan is being repaid.
What you miss out on
Theft, fire, storm and glass damage. Those are causes outside your control; for a car worth a few thousand euros, third-party, fire and theft is often a small step up.

What is covered and what is not
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party liability + fire and theft |
|---|---|---|
| A stone-chip star in your windscreen that you have repaired | No | Yes |
| Your car is stolen from the drive at night | No | Yes |
| A branch blows onto the roof of your car in a storm | No | Yes |
| You hit a parked car while pulling out of a space | Yes | Yes |
| The damage to your own bumper in that same manoeuvre | No | No |
| Someone scratches a key along your door | No | No |
Weigh the premium against the market value of your car: if that is low, the narrowest cover remains defensible.
