In brief

Outsourcing can take two forms. With discretionary management the provider makes the decisions within a profile agreed in advance and does not have to consult you on each transaction. With investment advice you receive a recommendation and decide yourself; each transaction is then your decision, with the responsibility that goes with it. Both forms require a licence for investment services. The difference between the two determines not only the costs but also whom you can turn to if things go wrong.

Finass Verzekert advises and acts as an intermediary in non-life insurance only. Investment services fall under a different licence category: we do not manage assets, give no investment advice and recommend no provider. What we do here is explain the terms used in a management agreement, so that you know which questions to ask before you sign. Check every party by its registered name in the public register of the AFM.

Past returns say nothing about the future and you can lose part or all of what you put in. A fall in value is not an insurable risk: no policy pays for it. If you want to know what is involved in trading actively yourself, read the page on trading.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that determine whether outsourcing gains you anything.

Management, advice or execution only: who bears what

With discretionary management the provider assesses whether the profile suits your situation and acts independently within it; if you complain later, the question is whether it stayed within that mandate. With advice, every transaction is your decision and the question is the quality of the recommendation. With execution only there is only a check that you understand the product and you carry everything yourself. Have the agreement state which of the three you are buying; that choice determines the standard against which everything is later measured.

Costs are the only part that is fixed in advance

Alongside the management fee you normally pay the ongoing costs within the funds used, transaction costs and sometimes a fee to the custodian. Those layers are rarely brought together in one figure. Ask for the total cost percentage per year including fund costs, and for an example of what that means in euros for the amount you are investing. Costs run on in years in which nothing is earned, and that is precisely why this is the part where comparing does pay.

A risk profile is an agreement, not a forecast

The profile records how much fall in value you are willing and able to bear, and with it the balance between equities and fixed-income holdings. So do not look at the expected return but at the maximum fall that goes with the profile, and ask whether you can sit out that fall without having to touch the money. Money you need within a few years for a refurbishment, a course of study or repaying a mortgage does not belong in a managed portfolio.

Getting out: notice period, transfer and separation of assets

Arrange when you sign how you get out again. Look at the notice period, at the cost of transferring holdings to another party, and at whether the portfolio is sold or transferred when you leave; that difference can matter for tax and for timing. Also check how your holdings are separated from the provider's own assets, so that they do not fall into the estate in a bankruptcy. The investor compensation scheme relates to not getting money or holdings back, never to a fall in value.

Protection does not cover a fall in value

Investments are normally held off the provider's balance sheet, so that they remain separate in a bankruptcy. The investor compensation scheme relates to not getting money or holdings back, not to a fall in value. If you lose money because the market falls, there is no scheme and no insurance that pays for it.

Investing with borrowed money

Investing with credit or with equity released from your home magnifies both gains and losses, while the interest continues to run. Please note: borrowing money costs money. Anyone choosing this has to be able to carry the payments even when the investment is under water for years. For the credit itself you go to a provider with a credit licence.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Total costs per year — The management fee, ongoing fund costs, transaction costs and custody fee added together.
  • Form of service — Discretionary management, investment advice or execution only; that determines who decides and against what it is measured.
  • Risk profile — The allocation agreed and the maximum fall in value that goes with it, which you have to be able to bear.
  • Investment horizon — How long you can do without the money; amounts you need within a few years do not belong in it.
  • Custody and separation of assets — How your holdings are separated from the provider's own assets in the event of its bankruptcy.
  • Notice period and transfer costs — How quickly and at what cost you can end the portfolio or move it to another party.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does Finass Verzekert manage assets?

No. Our licence covers advising on and acting as an intermediary in non-life insurance only. Discretionary management and investment advice fall under a different licence category which we do not hold. So we manage no money, make no recommendation about providers or products and receive nothing for it. For your insurance for the home, traffic, liability and business you can come to us.

What is the difference between management and advice?

With discretionary management the provider decides within the agreed profile without consulting you on each transaction. With investment advice you receive a recommendation and take the decision yourself. That difference determines the costs, the frequency of contact and above all what the service is measured against afterwards: the mandate with management, the quality of the recommendation with advice.

What happens if the manager goes bankrupt?

Investments are normally held off the provider's balance sheet, in a separate entity, so that they do not fall into the estate and can be transferred. In case that nevertheless goes wrong there is the investor compensation scheme, which relates to not getting money or holdings back. A fall in the value of your portfolio never falls under it and is not insurable either.

How do I check whether a provider holds a licence?

Search the AFM's public register for the registered name of the business, not for the trading name from an advertisement or an email. If the party is not listed, or the address differs from what you were sent, do not transfer any money. Note too any promised or guaranteed returns; with investing that can by definition not be delivered.
