In brief

In your personal environment you find the administrative side of your insurance: the policy schedule for each insurance, the version of the conditions that goes with it, the premium invoices and your contact details. That is useful if you want to check quickly what cover you have, which excess applies or from when a policy runs. What is in the file is a representation of your records; what remains decisive is the policy schedule with the conditions as established by the insurer.

A number of things deliberately do not run through a login screen. Reporting a claim calls for an explanation and often for documents, and has to reach the insurer as soon as you are reasonably aware of the loss; that is the obligation in Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code. Use report a claimfor that. A change of cover, a change of address that affects the risk or adding a family member as an insured also calls for assessment by the insurer. An adjustment you only note in your own environment is not a notification to the insurer.

We will never ask you by email or telephone for your password, a verification code or your full bank details. If you receive such a request, do not respond to it and contact us through contact. How we handle your personal data is set out in the privacy policy; the condition documents themselves can be found through policy conditions.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare personal liability insurance (AVP).

What you do and do not arrange online

Four points that raise questions as soon as someone logs in for the first time.

What you can update yourself

Contact details, email address, telephone number and the account number for the direct debit you normally update yourself. If you move house, that is not an administrative change: the address and postcode help determine the risk and the premium on a home or car insurance. So always report a move to us or to the insurer as well.

A note in the file is not a claim notification

A note, an uploaded document or a message in your own environment does not replace the formal notification. Report a claim by the route set out in the conditions and keep the confirmation. Do not admit liability to another party before the insurer has responded; the policy leaves the settlement of a claim to the insurer.

What you cannot find online anywhere

The limits of your cover are set out in the conditions and not on an overview screen. Almost every policy excludes intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), as well as war risks and nuclear reactions and damage caused by earthquake and flood. Also wear, deferred maintenance and inherent defect fall outside almost every type of cover. Read those chapters before you assume something is insured.

Access, authorisation and shared viewing

Access is personal. If you want a partner, a child or a bookkeeper to see it too, arrange that with an authorisation rather than by sharing login details; shared login details make it impossible to establish who made a change. In the event of death or guardianship, access runs through a written request with supporting documents.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of cover chosen — wider cover means a higher premium
  • Sum insured — the maximum payout per event or per year
  • Excess — a higher excess lowers the premium
  • Address and housing situation — the region, construction type and use all count
  • Claims history — earlier claims count in acceptance and premium
  • Payment term — paying annually is usually cheaper than monthly

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

I cannot get into my environment. What now?

First request a new password through the recovery function, using the email address we have on record. If that does not work, that address is probably no longer correct. In that case get in touch with your policy number to hand; we will check your details, update the email address and, if you wish, send the documents by post.

Can I cancel my insurance online?

You cancel with the insurer, in writing or by the route set out in the conditions, observing the notice period. Cancel nothing before any new policy has definitely been accepted, otherwise you are without cover for a period. We arrange the cancellation for you if you wish and keep track of the connecting date.

Which version of the conditions applies to me?

The version shown with a code and date on your policy schedule. That continues to apply as long as the insurer does not change the conditions; if there is a change you receive notice in advance, usually as at the renewal date. If you do not know which version you have, give us your policy number and we will send you the right document.

Are my details in the environment protected?

The connection is secure and access is personal. We process your data in order to perform the insurance contract and to advise on it, as described in our privacy policy. Do not share your login details and use a unique password. If you suspect misuse, change the password and report it to us.
